The Neag School of Education and its Alumni Board announced their 2020 Neag School Alumni Awards honorees.  Dr. Christine L. Carver was been named the 2020 Outstanding School Superintendent of the Year!

Dr. Carver was identified for this prestigious award by the dean and faculty of the Neag School of Education. This award is given annually to a graduate who has made a significant impact on education, has a national reputation for her/his work, has been an inspiration to other professionals, and has shown continued involvement with the Neag School of Education.

For the past five years, Christine L. Carver has served as superintendent of Bethel (Conn.) Public Schools, where she led a diverse stakeholder committee in developing a five-year strategic plan; implemented school improvement plans; oversaw building infrastructure, security, and budgets; and facilitated parent, board, legislative, and community engagement. Previously, Carver was the associate superintendent of human capital development for Newington (Conn.) Public Schools and also held various district-level administrative positions for New London (Conn.) Public Schools. In addition, Carver has been active with the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents and various legislative task forces for the Connecticut General Assembly.

Dr. Carver was formally recognized at the School’s 22nd annual Alumni Awards Celebration.  

Dr. Carver is a graduate of the University of Connecticut and Sacred Heart University. She received her Doctorate of Education in 2009, her Sixth Year in Administration in 2001, her Master of Science in Special Education in 1997, and her Bachelor of Science in Special Education in 1991. Dr. Carver began her career as a Special Education Teacher at Whittier Union High School in Whittier, CA in 1991. She continued her special education teaching career at Woodstock Academy in Woodstock, CT in 1993. She then became a Special Education Teacher and Department Chair at New London High School before being appointed the Supervisor of Special Education in 2002 and then the Director of Special Services in 2003, also in New London. In 2008, she was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Schools in New London from 2008 until May 2012, serving as Interim Superintendent of Schools in the summer of 2009. After four years, she became the Associate Superintendent of Human Capital Development, Chief of Staff in Newington, CT Dr. Carver is a member of the Superintendent's Network, the American Association of School Administrators, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the American Association of School Personnel Administrators, Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents (CAPSS) and the District Management Council.  Dr. Carver currently serves on the Executive Board of the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents as Secretary. She has been on the Board of Directors for CAPSS since 2015.
