Bethel Board of Education Meeting

Superintendent's 2013-2014 Budget Presentation

January 22, 2013

7:00 PM

Board of Education Conference Room E

One of our goals this year is to improve the frequency of programming we offer parents to assist them in supporting their children’s educational needs. Through the Family School Partnership and Central PTO we are able to offer Parent University on February 5th. This evening will feature keynote presenter, Jonathan Costa, author of Digital Learning for All Now, followed by a series of breakout sessions. These sessions range in topic. Please mark your calendars and join us on this first of a kind event. Details are listed below.

The Bethel Education Foundation’s Barnum Ball will take place on Saturday March 2nd. The Foundation has provided over $80,000 in grants to our staff to support the high level of innovative practice taking place in our schools. Most recently the foundation purchased a mobile world language lab for BHS. This item is a game changer for our teachers and will transform our world language instructional practice. In an era lean budgets we rely heavily on the foundation and others to support our efforts to remain on the leading edge of educational transformation. Please give every consideration to buying a ticket – it is a truly fabulous community event and the funds support our educational initiatives.

Congratulations to the BHS grapplers who won a very tough meet last night against Derby! Keep up the solid effort!

If you are looking for something to do tonight, our high school basketball team faces a tough opponent tonight at home. Come see BHS take on Immaculate! Varsity game begins at 7pm. For younger students, BHS Key Club is sponsoring movie night tonight also at 7pm in the high school cafeteria. Admission is free, refreshments will be sold.

Due to the storm we have revised our district calendar to accommodate for the 4 days lost due to Hurricane Sandy.  The revisions are as follows:

*School was in session on Monday, November 12th

*School was in session on Friday, January 18th.

*School will be in session on Monday, February 18th & Tuesday, February 19th.

Spring will be on its way, and the Bethel Softball Association is looking to introduce more girls to playing softball in our T-Ball League.

It is a fun league that introduces the girls to TEAM SPORTS.  They will learn the basics: throwing, catching, fielding, running the bases and hitting.  They will start hitting off the tee, and halfway through the season, the coaches will pitch.  Practices start early April, games start early May.  The girls play 2 days/week on the fields behind Berry School.

We hope you will register your daughter(s) to join us.  Parks & Rec registration is at the Municipal Center on School Street on Wednesday February 6th from 6:30 – 8:30 pm.  We are also offering early mail in registration on our website www.leaguelineup.com/bethelsoftball.  The early cost is $50 for an individual and $65 for a family until January 19th.  It will be $65/80 after the 19th until registration closes on February 22nd.

My two girls both play.  I started out coaching one team, and after such a rewarding experience, I decided to run the entire T-Ball league!  I promise you and your daughter will have a positive & rewarding season.
