Relaunch of BMS’ Tiger Times

A Request from Lt Commander Dwinells and Brotherhood in Action

Dear Parents, Care Givers, and Community Members:

I hope this finds you adjusting well after another crazy week of weather. I am hoping for some normalcy and a return to routine as we move through the remainder of November and into December.

Readers are reminded that we are in session Monday, Veterans Day. Our schools have planned meaningful events to teach students about the importance of this day and all the many reasons we pay tribute to our veterans. Once again, our NJROTC will have the honor and privilege of marching in the Veterans Day parade in New York. Middle Schoolers will be studying the Declaration of Independence, exploring timelines of various wars, discussing the meaning of sacrifices made by our soldiers, analyzing war veteran poetry, and participating in a morning service to pay tribute to our vets. Johnson School students will be hosting an assembly honoring veterans on November 20th at BMS at 8:45am. The public is invited to this event. On Veterans Day JS students will be working in their classrooms preparing their presentations, and creating cards and songs for the assembly on the 20th. Rockwell School students will visit their Veterans Wall in the main lobby of the school and have a visit from uniformed vets and representatives from a local drum corps. 100 small flags will be planted in the Rockwell hillside in remembrance of the sacrifices made by our soldiers. Berry school students will also visit their Veterans Wall in the main lobby of that school. Students there will have an opportunity to explore military artifacts like uniforms and various medals and will participate in discussions in their classrooms based on Scholastic News articles about Veterans Day.

I believe our schools will do a very thorough job of teaching our students about the importance of this day and mark it appropriately so students develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the sacrifices made by our soldiers. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Back by Popular Demand: It was clear after our Parent Survey administered last February that BMS parents want more timely information from the school. In response, the Tiger Times published its first edition recently. Congratulations to the fine work conducted by the contributing students! The link is on the bottom left of the BMS main page. http://www.bethel.k12.ct.us/subsite/bms

BROTHERHOOD IN ACTION: A Message from Lt. Commander Dwinells

There are many needy families in Bethel. The Brotherhood in Action requests that each student in Bethel bring one or two canned or dry food items to school on Monday or Tuesday of next week. Donation Boxes have been distributed to the schools. Once again, these donations go directly to the needy of Bethel.

If anyone wants to help sort, pack and deliver food, the schedule is on the BIA website. All are welcome and I will sign community service tracking forms for all students.      http://www.biabethel.org/home

Due to the storm we have revised our district calendar to accommodate for the 4 days lost due to Hurricane Sandy.  The revisions are as follows:

*School will be in session on Monday, November 12th

*School will be in session on Friday, January 18th.

*School will be in session on Monday, February 18th & Tuesday, February 19th.

Bethel Special Education PTO

November 15, 2012 – For PreK-12 Parents/Guardians of Students With Disabilities

The Bethel Special Education PTO is presenting a workshop to help parents of special needs children with “Chronic Sorrow.”  When a child with special needs is born, it can be life altering.  Both parents and siblings can feel intermittent and ongoing sadness cued by idiosyncratic everyday events, and/or missed typical developmental milestones. These Chronic Sorrow moments are felt in tandem with the love, joy, and pride we have for all our children. Standard grief therapy doesn’t address this particular experience; there is no “resolution” because the loss is ongoing. The experience of parenting a child with special needs has to be normalized and acknowledged in a supportive environment and/or group setting where optimism, humor, and resourcefulness are nurtured.

Our presenter is Susan Jacoby, a board certified Masters prepared psychiatric nurse practitioner who specializes in working with the parents and siblings of children with special needs. In a collaborative setting Susan uses Chronic Sorrow as the theoretical framework to provide a therapeutic and empathic healing experience focused on developing resources to move forward.

Please join us on November 15th, 6:30 to 8:30 pm in the Bethel High School Media Center for this special presentation.  If you have questions, please contact either Denise Howe or Melinda Belles-Preston, co-presidents, Bethel Special Education PTO.  RSVP to BethelSEPTO@gmail.com.
