Superintendent’s News

Kevin J. Smith, Ph.D., Superintendent of Schools

Dear Parents, Care Givers, and Community Members:

First and foremost, I hope all of you and your loved ones have come through this unharmed.  I was relieved to see so many back in school today. I realize this was an inconvenience for many who are still without and have been without power for multiple days. My own house is still dark and cold, but given the tragedies along the coast and in NY and NJ, I am counting my blessings.  Bethel has once again shown itself to be a community that comes together in crisis. This week I heard numerous stories of neighbors helping neighbors and witnessed the generosity of many. Bethel’s residents are wonderful models of community spirit for the children of this town.

Due to the storm we have revised our district calendar to accommodate for the 4 days lost due to Hurricane Sandy.  The revisions are as follows:

*School will be in session on Monday, November 12th

*School will be in session on Friday, January 18th.

*School will be in session on Monday, February 18th & Tuesday, February 19th.

Click here for the REVISED 2012-2013 school calendar.

When revising calendars we try to keep in mind the big picture and examine as many different options as possible and then choose the best course of action. These changes will satisfy some and dissatisfy others.  Selecting where to pull back days is not simply a matter of preference, nor is it a disregard for family vacation time.  Tacking days on at the end of the year does not necessarily serve the best interests of our students. In touring through the schools today, even after four very long days off, I witnessed a great deal of meaningful, powerful instruction. Teachers were prepared and students were engaged.  With regard to the upcoming changes, we are unable to change our November 9th professional development day because of existing contracts with a number of presenters and their lack of availability on the 12th.  (The other part of the equation for our teaching staff is the fact that we are in the midst of unprecedented, complex instructional change).  We will be sure that all schools respectfully honor our veterans and plan lessons so students understand the meaning of Veterans Day.

I recognize that some families plan to travel over the Presidents’ holiday. I apologize for the inconvenience this schedule change may cause.  With these changes, we are still scheduled to close June 14th.  We won’t make changes to the April break, so any additional closures will have to be made up in June. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have.

BEST OF LUCK to our BOYS Soccer Team and GIRLS Volleyball team! They are competing in the SWC tournament this Sunday.  The boys play Joel Barlow at 7pm at Pomperaug High School. Girls play Bunnell at  3:30pm at Joel Barlow High.

Also, due to the storm the BMS Musical “Oklahoma!” has been canceled and is being rescheduled.

Bethel High School On Stage Players Present:  "Murder Is A Game" by Fred Carmichael

A successful mystery writing team whose success has come to a halt receives an anniversary present from their publisher to spend a weekend at an old mansion built as a movie set.  The publisher also hires actors, unknown to each other to act out a murder plot.  The writing team, Sloan and Toby Bigelow, are delighted in the game and solve the fake murder, but then there is a real murder and further funny twists to the plot.  All the actors have the opportunities of playing themselves and then the imaginary people in the laugh filled mystery evening.

The Land Trust is trying to make its preserves more wildlife friendly.  As part of this effort, we invite you to join us to build bluebird houses.  Weather permitting, we’ll install those houses at our nearby preserve on Sky Edge Road.   Meet at the Stony Hill Fire House off Rt. 6 to work on the bluebird houses.

MARCH 10, 2013 @ 2:00 -  PRE-EARTH DAY PRESERVE CLEAN UP

This is the time of year when the discarded bottles and cans that disfigure our preserves are easiest to spot.  Earth Day, on April 22nd, is too late to clean up in this area because the invasive plants have already leafed out.  Meet at the Rockwell School Parking lot and we’ll break down into smaller work parties and go to the preserves that need to be picked up, or have brush cut back.  Wear gloves.

Reminder – Check Facebook (Bethel Land Trust) for updates.
