Storm Preparedness
BHS wins CABE Awards
BHS Marching Band Continues to Dominate
Dear Parents, Care Givers, and Community Members:
I am sure we all remember too well last October’s storm. With those memories in mind, we began our own storm preparations earlier this week. In the event that the storm significantly impacts our area (currently, possible scenarios range from no impact at all to a duplication of last year’s storm), we will attempt to communicate updates as often and in as many formats as possible (see below for the various media outlets we use). Our email system is now hosted remotely so we will have the ability to communicate via email. Additionally, we will use Twitter. You can follow me @DrKevinJSmith95, Matt Knickerbocker @MSKnickerbocker, or check in for updates on our district website, www.bethel.k12.ct.us. As you make your own preparations, please, if at all possible, consider alternative child care arrangements for next week that cover such contingencies as early dismissal, late arrival, and complete school closure.
All community members are encouraged to be aware of the track of the storm, listen for updates, and in the event of an emergency, listen for directions from our local officials.
Congratulations to BHS for earning an Honorable Mention in the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education award for Excellence for Educational Communications. Two of our A/V projects were cited for Honorable Mention: the video created for the BHS EMT program, and the Bethel High Art Show. Congratulations on a job well done to all those involved in creating those projects!
Congratulations to our BHS Wildcat Marching Band who took first place last Saturday in the Class II competition in Shelton. The Wildcats also won the Best Percussion Caption. Way to go, Wildcats!

With Hurricane Sandy potentially threatening Connecticut, Governor Dannel P. Malloy is asking residents to closely monitor the storm’s path over the next few days and to be prepared.
“Just as the state is monitoring and preparing, the public should do the same,” said Governor Malloy. “Some models predict that Sandy may move onshore somewhere in New England early next week. Although we are not certain the storm will impact the state, we need to be prepared...”
“Although hurricanes are unpredictable, this storm has the potential to impact Connecticut and we need to be prepared,” said DEMHS Deputy Commissioner William P. Shea. “Because a shift in the track of the hurricane of just a few miles can have a significant impact on the state, it is important to stay informed by listening to TV and radio and heed the warnings of public safety officials.”

Operation Sweet Tooth
The Bethel Navy JROTC is once again sponsoring Operation Sweet Tooth with the Bethel Gentle Dental Office. The Candy Buy-Back will happen on Friday, November 2nd from 3:30 to 5:30 PM at the Bethel Gentle Dental office on 27 Grassy Plain Street. Children participating will be eligible to receive prizes and gift certificates from local merchants. In addition, the children will receive $1.00 for every pound of candy ($5.00 max) donated.
The donated candy will be sent to troops from Bethel who are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan as our "Ambassadors of Bethel." The hope is that the troops will then share the candy with children in the war zone, thereby creating good will. Bethel residents are encouraged to participate. If there are any residents who know of someone serving overseas, please send their name and mailing address to LCDR Dwinells at BHS (dwinellsm@bethel.k12.ct.us)

In addition to carved pumpkins we will be holding a bake sale with lots of yummy treats. The event will start on Saturday October 27th from 9:00 - 5:00, Sunday 9:00 - 5:00 and on Monday from 12:00-5:00. Bethel High School On Stage Players Present: "Murder Is A Game" by Fred Carmichael
A successful mystery writing team whose success has come to a halt receives an anniversary present from their publisher to spend a weekend at an old mansion built as a movie set. The publisher also hires actors, unknown to each other to act out a murder plot. The writing team, Sloan and Toby Bigelow, are delighted in the game and solve the fake murder, but then there is a real murder and further funny twists to the plot. All the actors have the opportunities of playing themselves and then the imaginary people in the laugh filled mystery evening.

The Bethel Public Library is pleased to offer a free music program on Friday, October 26th at 7:00 p.m. in the Library’s Main Room. Historian/musician Rick Spencer will perform songs from the 1856 presidential campaign songbook “Freemen for Fremont.”
Here’s an entertaining way to discover history through music. Before radio, TV, or the Internet, campaign promoters included sing-alongs so supporters could sing about the virtues of their candidates and the failings of their opponents! In this program, you’ll hear those songs performed live, and gain an understanding of the United States on the brink of Civil War. This event is particularly appropriate as we approach Election Day!
The program will be enjoyed by adults and students in Grades 6+. Registration is required due to space constraints. Please call 203-794-8756, ext. 4, register at the website www.bethellibrary.org, or sign up in person at the Library. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

You will be able to observe army camp life and meet the reenactors. On sale will be food by the Bethel Boy Scouts and hand-crafted colonial items. The event is free but donations are encouraged.
Putnam Park is located at the junction of Rt. 107 and Rt 58 in Redding, CT.

November 11, 2012 @2:00 – BUILD A BLUEBIRD HOUSE
The Land Trust is trying to make its preserves more wildlife friendly. As part of this effort, we invite you to join us to build bluebird houses. Weather permitting, we’ll install those houses at our nearby preserve on Sky Edge Road. Meet at the Stony Hill Fire House off Rt. 6 to work on the bluebird houses.
February 10, 2013 @ 2:00 - SNOWSHOE AT TARRYWILE MANSION
Meet at the upper parking lot of the mansion for some vigorous winter exercise. Hikers and cross-country skiers are welcome too. Who knows what the weather will be. Tarrywile Park is located off Southern Blvd in Danbury.
MARCH 10, 2013 @ 2:00 - PRE-EARTH DAY PRESERVE CLEAN UP
This is the time of year when the discarded bottles and cans that disfigure our preserves are easiest to spot. Earth Day, on April 22nd, is too late to clean up in this area because the invasive plants have already leafed out. Meet at the Rockwell School Parking lot and we’ll break down into smaller work parties and go to the preserves that need to be picked up, or have brush cut back. Wear gloves.
Reminder – Check Facebook (Bethel Land Trust) for updates.
