CONGRATULATIONS

Last Sunday morning, Mr. Matt Knickerbocker and I had the pleasure of officiating seventh grade student, Ethan Brown’s attempt to set a world record by reciting in sequence from memory 2,000 digits of Tau. Ethan was successful in his attempt and recited 2012 digits of Tau in about 90 minutes. Below is the link to the video. Ethan now holds the world record for this endeavor. Bravo!

Ethan made this effort in support of a fundraiser for the Bethel Public Library that he planned, organized, and executed. His work with this endeavor reflects the kinds of values like service to community, perseverance and persistence we seek to instill in all of our children through a comprehensive educational program. Please join me in congratulating Ethan not just on his achievement but on his desire to channel his effort toward a public good.

Still time to vote: Bethel’s “Safety Guard‘in” Kid Team will pitch their business idea to Warren Buffett in person on May 21st. Out of 1,000+ entries, four Bethel students have made it to the finals in the Secret Millionaire’s Club “Grow Your Own Business Challenge.” The children are Michael Wipf, age 11; Diana Wipf, age 8; Amanda Carter, age 11, and Rockwell School student Lillian Carter, age 8. Remedial Summer School Grades 1-5 The remedial portion of summer school for grades 1-5 is tentatively planned. Parents should be looking for invitation letters in the mail. If you have signed your child up for an enrichment class and they are invited to the remedial program, you can receive a refund. Letters are going out this week to parents. On May 6, 2012, The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame DeSantis/McDougal Fairfield County Chapter held its annual Scholar Athlete & Awards Dinner. Brian Debacher, BHS Senior, was recognized as a Scholar Athlete. Bruce Martin, Associate Head Coach was honored as well being recognized by the Chapter as the Fairfield County Assistant Coach of The Year.

Congratulations to the 51 high school musicians who participated in the Hershey Park Competition Festival this past weekend.

Mixed Choir won 3rd place with a rating of SUPERIOR.

Women's Choir won 1st place with a rating of EXCELLENT.

Band won 1st place with a rating of SUPERIOR.

Many thanks to Mr. Coachman and Mrs. Neville for all of the time and effort dedicated to the success of our students.

We are very proud of these students for their wonderful performances and excellent behavior. They always represent our school and town well when they travel. It was a pleasure to hear the positive comments from the adjudicators and audience members.

Congratulations! Kevin Hannequin and Matt Hannequin were recognized as Outstanding Jazz Musicians at the Western CT State University Annual Jazz Ensemble Festival.

The Bethel High School Band programs have clearly illustrated why - for the 7th consecutive year - Bethel CT has been recognized as one of the "Best Communities for Music Education!"

Congratulations to Ciro Franco and the BHS On Stage Players! They were one of the high school drama groups selected to perform at the American High School Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland during August 2013. The two week festival includes performing 4 times in different venues in Edinburgh.

The BHS On Stage Players are up for 2 Halo Awards for this year's productions "Blithe Spirit" and "Jack and the Beanstalk". This event is sponsored by the equity theater in Waterbury, "Seven Angels Theatre" and will take place on May 30 at 6:00 P.M. at the Palace Theater in Waterbury. They will perform a 3 minute segment of "Blithe Spirit." 51 CT High Schools will be participating. If you are interested, tickets are available. Contact Seven Angels Theater. CONGRATULATIONS to Erin Meier, 3rd grader at Berry School, winner of our first Future Chefs competition sponsored by Sodexo School Services. Erin’s Bountiful Blueberry Muffins placed first in this live cooking competition that was held in Bethel High School’s culinary arts room on May 9th. The five finalists, including Madeline Zimmerman, Jenny Wool, Esteban Roman and Julia Krepsztul, prepared their healthy breakfast recipes with the help of Culinary Arts students Stephanie Forese, Andrea Germinaro, Morgan Chelednik, Kim Atherton and Jocelyn Willsey. The Seniors will each receive a $100 scholarship from Sodexo for assisting with this event. The finalists were judged on originality, healthy attributes, easy preparation and kid friendliness of the recipe. Special thanks to Dr. Smith, Dr. Cosentino, Betty Avery, Derek Muharem and Arelios Fernandes, owner of Jacqueline’s Restaurant, who served as judges.

Rockwell School 3rd graders will compete at Bethel High School on Monday, May 14th. The five finalists are Tyler Haick, Bennett LaBree, Isabella Zieman, Evan Hornbeck and Rachel Beck. Our judges will include First Selectman Matt Knickerbocker. The students will begin cooking at 11:30 a.m., and judging will start at 1:00 p.m. Please feel free to come by the Culinary Arts Room at Bethel High School on May 14^th to check out this fun competition!

Summer’s BEST 2012 has arrived! The Bethel Public Schools will be offering many new and dynamic programs. We hope to create a summertime adventure of discovery, fun, and learning that will build knowledge and enrich your child. The goal of the summer program is to encourage children to explore new skills, talents, and interests as well as maintain and sharpen academic skills, boost academic confidence, and reinforce the value of education.

The Enrichment programs are self- funding. The cost of each program is set to cover the cost of the teacher and the materials. You will be sending your child to a fun, safe, educational program.

Circle of Friends/Kindergarten News

Apply now for Morning-Care for Sept. 2012!

Applications are now being accepted for Morning Stars, a morning-care program for children in Berry and Rockwell schools. Morning Stars begins at 7:35 AM in room 102 of the high school, and is open on days that school is in session. At approximately 8:35 the children are taken by bus to their school. The fee for this program is $450.00 for the 2012-2013 school year.

Morning Stars is staffed by a teacher, teacher aides, and high school students who are in the Child Development Program at Bethel High School. The high school students plan a variety of projects for the children. In addition to planned activities, the children have an opportunity to read, get help with homework, play board games, socialize, etc.

You may pick up a registration form at your child’s school, or contact Sandy Milsap at milsaps@bethel.k12.ct.us (preferred) or 794-8600 ext 102.

Reminder to Parents about Kindergarten Registration

If you have a child who will be 5 years old on or before January 1, 2013, he/she is eligible to start kindergarten in August. If you have not already pre-registered, please do so by calling Sue White at 203-830-7355, Monday–Friday, between 9 AM and 3 PM.

The iPad and other tablets are dynamic technological tools that can aid communication, academic, and other skills for children with disabilities.
In a roundtable session, members of the Bethel assistive technology team will review some basic information as well as some of the latest apps to facilitate your child’s learning.

This is a hands-on learning opportunity – please bring your child’s iPad or tablet with you.

Rockwell School News

Third Graders at Rockwell school successfully completed the Trout in the Classroom project. Over the past two weeks, the third graders have released over 100 juvenile brown trout into East Swamp Brook here in Bethel. The Trout in the Classroom project is an environmental education program in which students raise brown trout from eggs to fry, monitor the tank water quality, learn to appreciate water resources, and begin to foster a conservation ethic. From the time the eggs arrive in November to their release in May, the students apply their developing scientific, literacy and mathematic skills to learn all about trout, their needs and adaptations through their hands on experience in the classroom. It requires a lot of hard work and dedication from the classroom teacher and the students, but satisfaction of watching the "fingerling" trout swim off into their new habitat makes it all worth it! Congratulations Third Graders!!

Middle School News

On Monday May 21st, Detective Bryce, Detective Morris, and Officer Farina from the Bethel Police Department are hosting a parent meeting on sexting, texting and the dangers of social media sites. This presentation is one you do not want to miss. It will be from 6:30 - 7:30 in the BMS auditorium. I strongly encourage all to attend. This meeting is for parents of children in grades 5 - 8.

Middle School Summer Enrichment Programs

The date of BMS' spring choral concert had to be changed. The concert will now be held on Wednesday, May 23rd at 7:00 p.m. in the BMS auditorium. All students in Mr. Gorski's 6th grade chorus, 7th and 8th grade Troubadours and Treble Choir are needed to make this performance a success.

High School News

Class of 2012 Graduation - The Board of Education approved the graduation date for the Class of 2012 at their meeting last Thursday. The Bethel High School graduation will be held on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at 6:00 PM at WCSU's O'Neill Center.

The Bethel Community Care Coalition, the Housatonic Valley Coalition against Substance Abuse, and the Bethel Police Department will be hosting a pre-prom Ice Cream Social for parents of students attending the Senior Prom. This event will take place on Tuesday May 22, 2012 from 7-8PM in the Bethel High School cafeteria and will be an informational session for parents to help make their child's prom night fun and safe. Our featured speakers will be Attorney Colleen Zingaro from the Danbury Office of the State's Attorney and Allison Fulton from the Housatonic Valley Coalition against Substance Abuse. Prizes include 8 free prom tickets as well as $20.00 off the price of the prom ticket for the first 25 people to sign up and attend the event. The event is free and open to parents as well as students, but reservations are required. The BHS School Counseling Department will be hosting a new program, “College Financial Planning”. Mike Dailey form The College Authority will be presenting valuable information for parents of Sophomores and Juniors. The annual Bethel High Art Show will be held on Thursday, May 17th at 7:00pm. This year’s theme is "Art Games." Be sure to stop by and see how incredibly busy and productive the High School Art students have been through the school year.

Parents of the class of 2012, as part of the post prom activities, we would like to establish a memory wall for the students. We are looking for class pictures from all of the pre-school, elementary school and middle school grades. If you have class pictures to share, please send an email to Michele, Mary, or Paula letting us know what year and school. We will contact you if we need that particular year and school.

In addition to class pictures, we would like to put up miscellaneous candid pictures of the kids from birthday parties, scouting events, Halloween parades, team pictures, etc. The pictures may be dropped off in the main office, in room 221, or sent electronically to Mary, Michele, or Paula (our email addresses are listed below). Please mark all pictures with your name and what school year it is from, Rockwell/Berry, etc. so that we may return them to you.

Bethel Winter Guard - Winter guard, also known as the Sport of the Arts, is an activity that combines the athleticism of a sport with the creativity of dance, using flags and ornamental sabers and rifles. Bethel has three winter guard programs, Junior, Junior Varsity and Varsity, all with long winning traditions.

The Bethel Winter Guard will be holding a clinic, and would like to invite all boys and girls, from third grade through high school, to stop by and learn more about our sport.

Registration begins Tuesday, April 24, 2012 for Bethel Residents at the Parks & Recreation office during regular office hours from 8:30a.m. to 4:30p.m. Non Residents may register starting May 1, 2012. Plumtrees School Association is Seeking Associate Members - The Plumtrees School was built in1867 as a one room school house for the Plumtrees District of Bethel. The school served the community from 1867 through 1970. At its closing, it was the last operating one room school house in America. The Plumtrees School now serves the community as an educational museum. The original Plumtrees School Association was established in 1939. The Association was formed by parents to assist in providing school materials and maintenance to the school. Today the Plumtrees School Association is a non-profit corporation registered with the state of Connecticut. The Town of Bethel has granted a Historic Easement to the association which charges the association with overseeing the preservation of the school building, contents and grounds. The Association also holds an Annual Christmas Party and gives tours to school groups, scouts and others who are interested in seeing a traditional one room school. The Association is now seeking associate members. Associate membership costs $15per year and helps to fulfill it’s the mission. Association Members will assist the board with the preservation of this town treasure. REMINDER #1: Monday, January 16, the Bethel Public Schools will be closed for Professional Development Day for staff.

REMINDER #2: ANNUAL BETHEL HIGH NJROTC CHRISTMAS TREE PICK-UP, SATURDAY, JANUARY 7, 2012. Please support the Bethel High School Navy JROTC program and let them pick up your Christmas tree to recycle it. All trees will be mulched and taken to a local farm. PLEASE have trees out by 9am. Trucks will be out picking up trees between 9am-Noon. (Snow date is Sunday, 12-3 PM) A $10.00 donation is suggested and goes toward Educational Programs for our cadets. PLEASE make checks out to “Bethel NJROTC Boosters” and leave in an envelope taped inside your storm door or other accessible area.

I hope everyone had a happy holiday season and I wish you all a happy and healthy New Year.

I am very pleased to announce a new service for all Bethel residents. Beginning Wednesday, January 4^th, a mobile health care van began visiting Bethel The van will park by the back entrances to the Senior and Teen Centers beginning at 9:30am until noon.

The van is fully equipped to handle all routine medical needs. Advance appointments are not necessary, but follow up appointments may be scheduled as needed. The program will accept all patients as well as most health care insurance plans, without regard to employment status. Those without insurance will be charged on a sliding scale according to income.

The health van is provided by the Greater Danbury Community Health Center and is funded by a grant from the Federal Government.

Travel to a world of pure imagination when Bethel High School presents the stage musical of Roald Dahl’s “Willy Wonka.” The family-friendly production features lavish sets and memorable songs. Performances are Friday, February 3 and Saturday, February 4 at 7:00 p.m. , with a special matinee on Sunday, February 5 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students/senior adults. Topic #4: Parents and Guardians of the Class of 2012: As of January 1, 2012 you are able to file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

Western CT State University will be hosting College Goal Sunday on January 29th. At this event, students and parents can get FREE assistance completing their FAFSA. If your student is planning on a post-secondary education after graduation it is important to file, even if you do not think you qualify for financial aid. Many scholarships committees ask to review the EFC Report as part of their criteria to award scholarships.

Topic #5: Pre-School Screening! Are you concerned that your child might be experiencing developmental delays? If so, you and your child (3-5 years old) are encouraged to participate in a Circle of Friends screening. While meeting the staff to discuss concerns or ask questions regarding your child’s development, your child will take part in informal play activities that include songs and motor activities.

The preschool team includes the Supervisor of Special Education, Preschool Special Education Teachers, Speech/Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist and School Social Worker. The screening date is Wednesday, January 25th from 10:30-11:30 a.m.

OPEN HOUSE For CIRCLE OF FRIENDS

School Year 2012-2013

Circle of Friends Preschool program, an integrated early childhood program for three and four year olds, has openings for the 2012-2013 school year. This program provides a developmentally appropriate curriculum that focuses on the appreciation of differences, self-esteem and independence.

The OPEN HOUSE will take place on January 11, 2012, in the Berry School Media Center from 7:00-8:00 p.m. (Snow date January 18th) Program information, brochures and applications will be available. This will also provide an opportunity to meet the program staff.

Topic #6: Thirty Bethel High students will be traveling abroad this summer to visit the spectacular cities of London, Paris, and Barcelona. In order to prepare for the trip, students will meet at 6 p.m. in Room 218 on January 26, March 15 and May 23 to learn more about these countries, their culture and language. REMINDER #1: Monday, January 16, the Bethel Public Schools will be closed for commemoration of Martin Luther King Day. Monday is Professional Development Day for staff.

The Board of Education employs this weekly e-newsletter as a tool to publish information about school and community events. We are grateful for the positive feedback we receive about this simple publication. This newsletter is not restricted to those having children in the Bethel Schools. If you know of a neighbor or friend who would like to receive this e-newsletter, let them know that they can go to: boe@bethel.k12.ct.us. Then leave a name and email address in the text area. Topic #1: Congratulations to the Bethel High NJROTC cadets for receiving an extraordinarily positive review on their recent inspection by the Naval Service Training Command. The Bethel High Unit earned “Outstanding” marks in the areas of School System Support, Administration of the Program, the Academic Program, Cadet Performance, and Student Mentoring. The cadets earned only one “above Average” mark and that was for Reports and Record-Keeping. The detail of this inspection was impressive. The performance of the Bethel High Unit was equally impressive.

Topic #2: The Bethel High ROTC Christmas Tree Pickup was a great success once again. We had 70 cadets and 22 trucks driven by parents pick up and chip nearly 400 trees from around Bethel in under 3 hours. Special thanks go out to the booster parents who helped plan and organize the event, especially Mr. and Mrs. DeRosier, Mrs. Budding and Mrs. Iorfino. We are grateful to all those who arranged for tree pick up and whose generosity made this an excellent fundraiser.

Topic #3: Middle School Parents and Students! Back by popular demand, BHS Spirit Wear will be on sale during the lunch waves (11:20am -1:15pm) at BMS next Friday, January 20th.

Topic #4: Come and live with me in peace and safety, away from all the Wangdoodles, and Hornswogglers, and Snozzwangers, and rotten, Vermicious Knids--Willy Wonka. Topic #5: Circle of Friends has been participating in a program along with United Way to encourage reading. The three morning classes participating have been paired up with students from Mrs. Quader and Mrs. Bianco’s fourth grade classes from Johnson School. The preschoolers are read to by their Johnson School buddy and afterwards complete an art project. The younger students really enjoy having the stories read and having someone to help them complete the art project. The preschoolers were sent home with information to register for Imagination Library, by the United Way, to receive a free book, monthly, until their fifth birthday.

Special congratulations to Mr. Derek Muharem who was named Principal of Bethel Middle School at last night's Board of Education meeting.

Topic #1: This year, the third grade students at Rockwell and Berry Schools will be learning about science and engineering through their participation in the Invention Convention program. We are looking forward to kicking off this unit very soon. We are looking for old or broken appliances that would be appropriate for the students to take apart and examine the inner workings. We will begin collecting them at both schools after the first of the year. If you have a small household or office appliance you are willing to donate, please consider dropping it off in your school’s office. The items will be collected from the schools as they come in.

Topic #2: The 9th Annual Bethel Navy JROTC military ball is fast approaching. It is scheduled for Sunday, February 19th from 4-9:30 PM at the Aqua Turf. U.S. Senator Blumenthal is the guest of honor for the second time!

In an effort to save money and minimize costs, the Bethel NJROTC boosters have collected over 40 ball gowns that are free to "borrow" for the event. The boosters are also making arrangements for discounts with local beauty salons, etc. Occasion's of Bethel is also offering discounted prices for gowns. Please e-mail Bethelnjrotcboosters@gmail.com for more information. For the gentlemen who need a Tuxedo, Mr. Albert Quell, owner of Bogeys Tuxedo, offers a discount of $89.99 for a complete set, and he will donate $5.00 to the NJROTC booster club for each rental.

Special Report: Dr. Chesley requests that Board of Education members occasionally spend part of a day to see for themselves the programs that taxpayers are funding. Part of the visitation includes a submission of a written report to the community about what the Board member say. We believe Board members have an obligation to see for themselves before they are asked to make decisions about programs. Board member Scott Clayton made a recent visit and submitted the following:

On Monday, January 9^th I had the unique opportunity to tour Berry, Rockwell and Johnson schools. I observed teachers using differentiated instruction and intervention techniques that supported all ability levels. I observed teachers monitoring learning and adjusting instruction in response to student performance. I observed teachers providing meaningful, appropriate and specific feedback to students during instruction with the specific purpose of improving their long term performance. What impressed me the most is that I saw teachers integrating learning activities that make real-world and promote interdisciplinary connections. As a member of the BOE, I feel that it is my duty to understand the scope of what goes on in our schools, specifically when it comes to the range of individual programs. I am thankful that Dr. Chesley, Dr. Smith and Ms. DiBiase invited me to accompany them. Our children are in good hands!

Topic #3: 2012 Connecticut Regional Scholastic Art Awards! This year Ms. Tinios and Ms. Berescik submitted artwork from Bethel Middle School to the juried 2012 Connecticut Regional Scholastic Art Awards. Topic #6: Boy Scout Troop #71 Pancake Breakfast will be held on Sunday, February 5, 2012 @ St. Thomas Church on Greenwood Avenue from 9:00A.M. until 12:00 P.M. The cost is $8.00 per person- $5.00 for children from ages 3 -10- under three -free. What a deal! Come help support the Boy Scouts and enjoy a delicious breakfast of pancakes, fruit, bacon, sausage and beverages.

Topic #7: Pre-School Screening! Are you concerned that your child might be experiencing developmental delays? If so, you and your child (3-5 years old) are encouraged to participate in a Circle of Friends screening. While meeting the staff to discuss concerns or ask questions regarding your child’s development, your child will take part in informal play activities that include songs and motor activities.

Topic #9: Thirty Bethel High students will be traveling abroad this summer to visit the spectacular cities of London, Paris, and Barcelona. Topic #10: SAVE THE NEW DATE! Friday, February 10^th. It continues to be a “Lucky Day” for Renewal House!! Renewal House is a transitional housing program for people 58 years old or more, who have been displaced and are transitioning back to independent living. Eran Troy Danner and his band have rescheduled our postponed benefit concert for Friday, February 10, 2012. We were knocked out by the October storm, but we’re back and ready to rock! And dance!

The concert will be held in the grand ballroom on Western Connecticut State University’s Westside Campus. The doors will open at 7:30pm. CALENDAR REMINDER: The Bethel Public Schools will be in session on Monday, February 20^th and Tuesday, February 21^st. As you are aware, these changes were made to this school year's calendar in November due to the inordinate amount of weather related closings we experienced earlier this year.

This newsletter marks my first as Bethel’s new Superintendent. It is my hope that readers continue to find this newsletter informative and view it as a useful tool for keeping abreast of the many great events and accomplishments occurring weekly in Bethel’s schools and community. My first week on the job has been spectacular. Having the opportunity to visit all of our schools and see firsthand the high quality instruction taking place in every classroom and witnessing the diversity of programming reaffirms my fundamental belief in the power of our schools to transform lives and build opportunity for our students. – Kevin Smith

Topic #1: Ahead of the Pack! We want everyone to know that the Bethel Schools will be featured as part of a documentary on Connecticut Public Television on February 9th, beginning at 8:30 p.m. The show is about the Connecticut student achievement gap. The film crew came to Bethel because our schools are being featured as role models for other districts in how to overcome the achievement gap. A large number of Bethel teachers were interviewed as part of this show. We are widely recognized in Connecticut as a high-performing school system. It is great to have affirmation --- and it does help home prices!

Topic #2: Bravo! On Wednesday February 1, 2012, Bethel High School recognized senior student-athlete Brandon Schmidt as he signed a commitment letter to play football for Army at West Point University. Brandon finished his high school career with over 3,000 rushing yards and over 1,500 passing yards. Brandon played the quarterback position his junior and senior years, and also played running back and defensive back. Brandon was a captain his senior year, a 3-year starter, and a 3-year letterman at BHS. He earned All-Conference recognition for the SWC in his senior year, and was elected to Hearst Media's All Area Team. Brandon's parents, Sandra and Guillermo, and his little brother Thomas attended the signing at BHS. Also at the signing showing their support were four of Brandon's football coaches: Head Coach Jason Gill, Associate Head Coach Bruce Martin, and assistant coaches Noel Gill and Ned Bellardinelli. Dr. Cosentino, along with assistant principals Gary Lawlor and Chris Troetti were also there to wish him good luck.

We at BHS are so proud of Brandon and his commitment to West Point to play Division I football. Brandon will surely contribute to West Point's renowned reputation as one of the most prestigious and revered universities in the country.

Topic #3: Congratulations! The Bethel High School Marching Band has been invited to march and represent the state of Connecticut in the 2013 National Independence Day Parade in Washington, D.C. This invitation has been presented to the Bethel High School Marching Band, based on a personal nomination from Congressman Christopher Murphy.

Topic #4: This past Wednesday, Bethel Middle School joined 2 million others in celebrating National Digital Learning Day. Sponsored by the Alliance for Academic Excellence, Digital Learning Day is a nationwide celebration of innovative teaching and learning through digital media and technology that engages students and provides them with a rich, personalized educational experience. Teachers and students shared the many cutting edge technology applications they are using to improve learning and raise student achievement. BHS celebrates Digital Learning Day today with lessons using ipads, ted.com, prezi, cell phones, 3D digital world applications, flip cameras and much more.

Special Report: On January 30, members of the Bethel Board of Education met with a group from BHS's Naval Junior ROTC program: program founder Lt. Commander Mark Dwinells accompanied by cadets Michael K., Ricardo P., Romana P., and Devon S.

Ted Stevenson wrote the following:

BHS ROTC: A successful program in crisis

In the Navy's most recent annual inspection, conducted in December 2011, the program received an overall rating of Outstanding, as it has regularly done over its decade-long history.

According to Commander Dwinells, the program represents a broad cross-section of the BHS student population, both academically and racially. It embraces honor students as well as those who struggle with learning. About 2 percent of the 205 cadets currently in the ROTC program are African American, 20 percent Hispanic, and 78 percent Caucasian.

By any measure, this is an exemplary program, and it has grown steadily over the years – to the point at which it is now, in a sense, facing a crisis:

Commander Dwinells and Master Sergeant Joseph Meehan make up the entire teaching staff (supplemented by a generous amount of volunteer time on the part of Mrs. Dwinells). As mentioned, the current population of the NJROTC program is 205 cadets (including 71 women), which makes for very large class sizes.

Moreover, among the eighth graders at BMS who will be BHS freshmen in the fall, no fewer than 138 students (including 51 females) have expressed strong interest in joining the program.

Given this impending population explosion, Dwinells expressed concern that without the services of an additional instructor, program quality would suffer. Although not the sole reason for this meeting with the Board, this issue became a dominant theme of the evening's conversation.

When asked by the Board if there was any feasible way of limiting enrollment, Dwinells voiced firm opposition to that option, since, as he stressed, there is no fair way to implement it.

In terms of curriculum, the NJROTC program places heavy stress on character development, with substantial time devoted to leadership and citizenship training, and military drill. Other areas of study include flag etiquette, survival skills, first aid, military history, outdoor orienteering, and marksmanship. "Everyone shoots," Dwinells said, going on to point out that marksmanship is intensive exercise in concentration and fine motor and visual skills.

Asked by the Board what they found most valuable about their ROTC experience, several of the cadets responded that their ROTC activities provided real life skills, as opposed to academics for academics sake. "I'm currently taking calculus," cadet Kaluta said, "but I'm not sure I'll ever have a use for it later in life."

As we delved more deeply in to this issue, cadets pointed out that in this program they get training in motivation, life planning – even study skills, which, of course has a positive impact on their academic studies.

With a third instructor in place, Commander Dwinells told the Board he would be freed up to develop new coursework. One of his pet projects would be a class teaching about U.S. interests around the world.

He also expressed interest in working with STEM teacher Gene Waring to develop a course that would teach hands-on practical skills – things like how to change a tire and how to repair a toilet. "I can integrate an equation," cadet Pilepich commented, "but I have no idea how to fix a toilet."

Questioned by the Board about possible outside sources of funding a third faculty member (who, he said would, ideally, be an accomplished, dynamic woman Petty Officer), Dwinells made it clear that he has devoted considerable thought to this question and that he is pursuing all options.

Topic #5: Reminder To Parents About Kindergarten Registration: If you have a child who will be 5 years old on or before January 1, 2013, he/she is eligible to start Kindergarten in August. If you have not already pre-registered, please do so by calling Sue White at 203-830-7355, Monday–Friday, between 9 AM and 3 PM. We will ask you for some basic contact information so we can send you a packet of registration paperwork (packets are being sent out this week). You will then be asked to call back by Friday, February 24^th and make a formal registration appointment for April. Hope to hear from you soon.

Topic #6: Kindergarten Parent Information Meeting: Parents of children who will be entering Kindergarten in August are cordially invited to a presentation on the Kindergarten programs at Berry and Rockwell Schools.

Tuesday, February 28, 2012 – 7:00 PM – Berry School Cafeteria - Mr. Brian Kirmil, the principal of Rockwell School, and Dr. Kristen Brooks, the principal of Berry School, will explain the focus of the Kindergarten program and answer questions you may have regarding your child’s upcoming Kindergarten experience.

Please note that in the case of inclement weather, a snow date for this meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, March 1, 2012.

Topic #9: The Bethel High Student Film Festival! The members of Mirage are sponsoring the 2nd annual Bethel High Student Film Festival to be held on Thursday, March 1st at 7 p.m. in the BHS Auditorium. All Bethel High students are invited to submit their short films for the event. Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

Topic #11: The spring sports parent meeting has been moved from Wednesday February 29th to Wednesday March 7th. This is a MANDATORY meeting for all parents of spring sport athletes at Bethel High School. Please plan to attend. The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m., and will be held in the BHS auditorium. The Athletic Director will make an informational presentation to all parents, which will be followed by break-out sessions with coaches for each of our spring teams.

Topic#18: Bethel Youth Wrestling K-8 is pleased to announce the following placements at the Western Connecticut Youth Conference Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, January 28th -29th, 2012 at the Danubury Pal Center and Ridgefield High School. This was a double elimination tournament with over 200 wrestlers each day who competed from all over Western Connecticut: 1st Place Champion - Max Lynch and Nicholas Cote!!!!! Third Place - Spencer Hoch, Tyler Cole, Clayton Thunhorst, Jack Lynch and Thomas Smith! 4th Place - Justin Masicioli, Miles DeRosa and Michael Mason! This was quite an accomplishment for these fine young wrestlers. Congratulations!!!

Bethel Photoworks is having a youth art show March 10, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. This will be a Juried Art show. Framed art needs to be handed in by March 3 to be judged. Bring it in by February 24 if you need the photograph to be framed. There will be special pricing for 8 X 12 photos as well as 10 X 14 photos.

Topic #1: The Bethel High School Internship, Cadet Teaching and CWE Programs provide structured, meaningful, independent experiences for senior students. These programs allow students to intern in local businesses, Bethel Public Schools and non-profit organizations so that they may explore potential careers and courses of study, and fully understand future career expectations. All three of these programs are up and running for the 2011-2012 school year. Seniors can choose from a large database of previously established community sites for their Internship. However, if students do not see exactly what they are interested in, calls and site visits are made until a successful relationship is established between student and site.

The Internship Program is pleased to announce new partnerships with the following sites:

The News Times - where our student has already conducted an interview, complete with camera crew, for a future edition of the paper.

Redding Police Department - where a student will be learning the inner workings of a career in the police force.

Pope John Paul Center - where our student will be working with Alzheimer patients to learn more about the field of Neuroscience.

Ridgefield Cosmetic and General Dentistry - is host to a future dentist.

Bethel Public Schools Speech Pathologists- will be shadowed in their daily work by two students.

Bethel Republican Campaign Headquarters -where a senior, who is interested in pursuing a career in the field of political science, will learn how a campaign is run.

Our Cadet Teaching program has placed 45 Bethel High School students in schools within the district; they are in classrooms ranging from Circle of Friends to Freshmen at the High School. Topic #3: High School Parents Mark Your Calendars NOW: The Bethel High Counseling Department will be hosting their annual Financial Aid Night, Wednesday, November 16th, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. in the Bethel High School Auditorium. You will need to hear the guest speaker from the Education Funding Consultants Association who will be presenting as a public service "Why Paying For College Could be the Best Thing to Happen to You!"

The following are some of the topics which will be covered:

• Instructions on filing financial aid forms and how to qualify for more aid.
• Key ways to reduce your child’s college tuition.
• Ways to help your child create a “competitive edge” for college admission.
• Dozens of helpful tax strategies designed to preserve your assets.
• How a private school may cost less than public school (price alone should not be a determinate).
• Different ways to pay for college through case studies.

Topic #4: A facility study of Rockwell and Johnson Schools was initiated by the Board of Education in early 2011 for the purposes of obtaining valid information about the current conditions of the mechanical, structural, and educational components of these buildings. Rockwell School was completed in 1971 and Johnson School was finished in 1980. As you know, aside from the recent boiler installations and 1998 roof replacements at both schools, no renovation or code work has take place in these facilities since their initial construction.

After multiple Request For Qualifications and Request For Proposal interviews, the Board selected the firm of Drummey, Rosane, and Anderson, Architects & Consultants, a highly respected Connecticut firm having particular expertise in school planning and design, to perform a forensic study on both school buildings. DRA brought their professional team of skilled, experienced architects and engineers to:

locate and evaluate any deficiencies in these 30-40 year old schools
judge the degree of concern presented by any deficiency
present options to correct deficiencies while also recommending meaningful educational program improvement options
develop current-use suggestions that would extend the useful life of both schools
devise scenarios or options to assist the Board and Town leaders in making judgments about the cost/benefits of various extend-the-life options

The study involved:

a detailed forensic investigative study of the existing conditions in each school
a careful study of existing educational programs and future curriculum/student requirements
an investigation into student population trends and growth expectations
development of various ideas for coping with building deficiencies
a series of workshops to explain the challenges and opportunities to the community
a final report with recommended solutions and cost estimates

What has already taken place?

DRA’s professional consultants completed their investigations of the existing conditions at both schools.
Two Community Workshops were held to obtain public input and present preliminary findings:

Workshop #1, on May 23rd, focused on listening to taxpayers express their opinions about the facilities based upon their own usage of the buildings as parents and as citizens without children. A walking tour allowed participants to see all aspects of the buildings. Faculty members at both schools also were invited to speak about the limitations the current buildings placed on teaching and learning.

Workshop #2, on June 13^th, focused on the existing conditions and deficiencies were presented to attendees based upon the architect’s initial review, with accompanying photographs of areas requiring further study.

Bi-weekly meetings, held between DRA and the Project Oversight Committee, examined architectural options aimed at addressing areas identified as deficiencies.

Through this email, I invite all parents to attend our third Community Workshop to examine the work of DRA and to hear the range of options that will be presented to the Board of Education and to the Town of Bethel. This meeting will be held on October 11^th at the Bethel High School Auditorium commencing at 7:00 p.m. The purpose of this workshop is for this study and process to remain transparent as we seek to fully inform all interested and affected parties about the conditions of these two important Town facilities. Recently, the Board of Education learned of the possibility that new federal funding may be available in 2012-2013 which could add to the state’s “rate of reimbursement” for any local school renovation project. Our goal is to be knowledgeable about the condition of our schools and to fully understand all funding opportunities that may lessen the burden on Bethel taxpayers.

Topic #6: DEADLINE EXTENDED TO NOON ON OCT. 5TH! A BHS Homecoming tradition! Purchase a Goody Bag for your child or favorite BHS staff member. Bags will include water, snacks and other surprises for only $10 per bag payable by check to "BHSPTSO". Write the student or staff member's first and last name and include a short message on a piece of paper. Topic #7: Pre-School Screening

Are you concerned that your child might be experiencing developmental delays?

If so you and your child (3-5 years old) are encouraged to participate in a Circle of Friends screening. While meeting the staff to discuss concerns or ask questions regarding your child’s development, your child will take part in informal play activities that include songs and motor activities.

The pre-school team includes the Supervisor of Special Education, Pre-school Special Education Teachers, Speech/Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist and Physical Therapist.

Please support the Bethel High School Navy JROTC program and let them pick up your Christmas tree to recycle it. All trees will be mulched and taken to a local farm. PLEASE have trees out by 9am. Trucks will be out picking up trees between 9am-Noon on SATURDAY, JANUARY 7, 2012.

Topic #1: In compliance with state law, Radon air sampling results for all five Bethel schools has been completed. Sampling was done by Hygenix, a company certified by the State of Connecticut to do this work. Between 28 and 61 rooms were tested in each school, depending on the size of the school. In every school building, the air samples were well below the federal limits. A copy of the laboratory report for each school and relevant documents related to the testing can be viewed at the school offices.

Topic #2: The Bethel High School Senior Class of 2012 will provide a fun-filled evening for your child age 4-10 on SUNDAY, December 18, 2011 at Bethel High School. (NOTE: The location and day have changed from previous babysitting nights).

Topic #3: A Bethel family of five lost their home due to a fire on Saturday. The Bethel community is reaching out to assist this family. Donations are being accepted and can be dropped off at 32 Midway Drive or at Famous Pizza. The family is in need of gift cards and money to purchase food, clothing, and household items. The American Red Cross is also assisting the Bethel family. You can contact them for more information.

Topic #4: The BHS Rebound Club is hosting a Holiday 3 on 3 basketball tournament December 28th starting at 7:00 pm until completion at the Bethel High School Gym. Get the kids out of the house and active!! Players get a team together and have some fun! Open to all Bethel Youth 4th thru 12th grade. This is a double elimination tourney with both boys and girls brackets. Prizes will be awarded for the winners. Topic #6: Travel to a world of pure imagination when Bethel High School presents the stage musical of Roald Dahl’s “Willy Wonka.” The family-friendly production features lavish sets and memorable songs. Performances are Friday, February 3 and Saturday, February 4 at 7:00 p.m. , with a special matinee on Sunday, February 5 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students/senior adults. You can order tickets in advance with the attached form---they make great gifts for the holidays!

Topic #7: We were pleased to learn this week that Bethel Schools will be featured in a documentary produced by Connecticut Public Broadcasting. The 90 minute show will be aired on February 2. The topic of the documentary is the student achievement gap in the State of Connecticut. Dr. Chesley and a number of Bethel teachers were interviewed because Bethel is featured as a school district where students are performing well above statistical expectations. The questions asked of Bethel educators were about what causes our success in improving student achievement and can the Bethel strategy be replicated across the state.

Topic #8: Glenn Marshall, the Connecticut Commissioner of Labor, and Rina Bakalar, the Executive Director of the Connecticut Labor Office for Workforce Competitiveness, will be making a site visit to Bethel High School to see the Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences in action with teacher Karen Fildes on January 31st. This program is largely grant funded and is a pilot for the State of Connecticut. It represents the most advanced thinking in terms of science instruction. We are proud of the work of our students and teachers in this cutting-edge program.

Topic #9: On Wednesday, December 21st, Bethel High will host the annual Returnee Program for current seniors. Members of the class of 2010 have been invited to be part of a panel speaking on the college experience. They are asked to share impressions on their respective colleges, as well as their perspective on how to make a final decision on college, how to handle the transition from BHS to college, financial aid, etc. This is one of the most anticipated days in the year for our seniors.

Topic #10: Bethel Youth Wrestling is proud to announce the following placements at the New Milford Classic Tournament on Sunday, December 11th: Bryan Bornn 1st place, Nick Cote 1st place, Robert Ruiz 2nd place, Angelo Miscoli 2nd place, Clayton Thunhorst 2nd place, Thomas Smith 3rd place, Alex Hoch 3rd place, Justin Jones 3rd place, Michael Mason 3rd place.

Special Report: Dr. Chesley requests that Board of Education members occasionally spend part of a day in Bethel Schools to see for themselves the programs that taxpayers are funding. Part of the visitation includes submission of a written report to the community about what the Board member saw. We believe Board members have an obligation to see for themselves before they are asked to make decisions about programs Board Member Robin Renner made a recent visit and submitted the following:

“I recently had the opportunity to observe 4 classrooms in the Bethel Schools. At Bethel Middle School I visited the classrooms of Mrs. Doris Murphy, 8th grade Language Arts, Mr. Peter Barrett, 8th grade Social Studies, at Bethel High School I visited the AP Calculus class of Mrs. Mariya Peterson and then Circle of Friends at Berry School.

Although I visited three very different classes at Bethel Middle School and Bethel High School, a common thread ran through all of them. All three teachers (in the different subjects) were focusing on having the students make personal connections to the material they were learning. Students who make personal connections are better able to understand the material. When they can draw on their prior knowledge and experiences it makes them more engaged in the learning process.

In Mrs. Murphy’s clas,s the students were reading the book “The Giver”. Mrs. Murphy very adeptly guided the students to make connections to their own lives. She had them share their own written work about a connection they had to a character in the book and a certain situation in the book. This activity allowed them to put themselves in the characters that were in the book so they could better relate to what they were learning. She allowed the conversation to revolve around their own ideas as to how they could relate to a character or situation. The discussion was going so well and the students were so engaged that she was willing to allow the discussion to go off in a slightly different direction. This was not distracting at all but rather very sophisticated and thoughtful. The students really felt they were contributing to the class and they were very eager to participate. Making connections to text can be difficult for many students but she made it look easy.

Mr. Barrett’s class was learning about the Declaration of Independence. The project assigned that day was for each student to write their own Declaration on Independence on something they would like to declare their independence from. This is quite an interesting challenge for eight grade students. Mr. Barrett shared past student documents with his class to model for them how they may approach their own document. He is so excited about the subject he is teaching that he easily passes along that excitement to his students. You could literally see the ideas of the students popping out of their heads. This was a perfect assignment to allow the students to make a personal connection to an area of study in social studies.

Mrs. Peterson was teaching how to estimate the area under a curve on a graph using calculus. While the math appeared difficult, Mrs. Peterson made it very easy to understand. She also used her SMARTboard technology in her class by doing a visual display of the graph while instructing the class on the formula to use. The students then also drew out the graph while performing the calculation so they could directly see a visual with the math problem. While students in math classes often say “why do I need to know this” Mrs. Peterson had the students connect the math they were learning to everyday life. Formulas they were learning are used in the fields of engineering and architecture. Even if you knew nothing about calculus you could easily follow her instruction. Mrs. Peterson took one very complex concept and by the end of the period you could see that every student could do it based on their level of engagement and participation.

Circle of Friends Pre-School is always a joy to visit. Here I saw our littlest learners of ages 3 and 4 actively engaged with multiple activities. Each activity is designed to instruct these children in a variety of ways. For example at the rice bench students are to use large tweezer utensils to sort through the rice and find plastic letters and then sort the letters. This activity involves using fine motor skills, recognizing letters and also team work as they work together at the table. Another activity involved counting the number of students that were in the classroom. This involved actual counting of girls vs. boys, sorting the students into groups of girls and boys, writing the numbers of each group on the board and then adding numbers together knowing what a plus and equal sign mean. How amazing to be doing all of this at four years of age!

What truly amazed me at Circle was to see the use of the iPad in each of the classrooms. These were being used mainly for the students who have special needs. They were being used for reinforcement for working hard, communication and reinforcement of cognitive skills. The iPads are amazing instructional tools for these students. The students worked very adeptly with them operating them with ease while practicing skills such as fine motor, verbal and listening skills.

The classrooms in Bethel are humming with exhilarating lessons, engaging teachers and excited students. It truly is a pleasure to see.”

Topic #11: Pre-School Screening! Are you concerned that your child might be experiencing developmental delays? If so, you and your child (3-5 years old) are encouraged to participate in a Circle of Friends screening. While meeting the staff to discuss concerns or ask questions regarding your child’s development, your child will take part in informal play activities that include songs and motor activities.

A facility study of Rockwell and Johnson Schools was initiated by the Board of Education in early 2011 for the purposes of obtaining valid information about the current conditions of the mechanical, structural, and educational components of these buildings. Rockwell School was completed in 1971 and Johnson School was finished in 1980. A Community Workshop will be held on October 11^th at the Bethel High School Auditorium commencing at 7:00 p.m. to examine the work of our architects and to hear the range of options that will be presented to the Board of Education. This facilities study of Rockwell and Johnson Schools is not connected in any way with the efforts by a private group of citizens to finance the study of a town swimming pool.

Topic #: Save the Date. On October 19^th, the Bethel PTO and the Bethel Education Association will be co-sponsoring a non-partisan Candidate Forum for those running for the Board of Education. Seven positions will be on the ballot. The event will begin at 6:30 at Bethel High with candidates representing the Democratic and Working Families Parties answering questions. At 7:45 candidates from the Republican, Independent and Connecticut Tea Parties will answer questions. We encourage everyone to attend.

Topic #: Bethel Education Foundation's first Annual Fund Drive is underway. Letters were sent home last week and a copy of it is attached to this newsletter. Please consider sending in a donation (of any size) to help support all Bethel schools. The BEF recognizes innovative teachers with teacher grants. It also funds unique and creative projects and programs in our schools that are not provided for through tax-payer money. Topic #: This email serves as formal notification that initial radon-in-air testing will be conducted November 14 – November 18, 2011 in four schools. According to Connecticut General Statute 10-220(d), schools are required to inspect and evaluate the indoor air quality of school buildings. This required inspection and evaluation of indoor air quality includes evaluation of radon in air and water. Testing will take place at Johnson, Rockwell, BMS, and BHS. Testing was completed at Berry School in the spring and no problems were detected.

Hygenix, Inc. will conduct the radon testing. To test for radon in air, small canisters containing charcoal will be placed in each of the occupied rooms that are in contact with the ground. These canisters will be left in place for three school days. Students will not notice their presence in classrooms. You will be informed of radon test results and interpretations as soon as possible. Topic #1: This is Bethel High’s HOMECOMING WEEKEND. The varsity football team will take on Weston Friday night at DeSantis Field beginning at 7:00. There will be a bonfire at the school beginning at 8:30 p.m. Alumni and families are invited to participate. The Bethel High School snack shed, run by the All Sports Booster Club will again feature BILLY’S BBQ. There will be Pulled Pork Sandwiches & Rib Samplers available for purchase at the snack shed – so dinner is planned for the whole family. We encourage tailgating in the parking lot if you clean up after yourself!(no alcohol please). We hope the community will support the team and have some great food!!

Topic #2: The new Wildcat Sweatshirt will be available at the Homecoming Football game this Friday Night! Kid sizes too! Adult $25, Child $20. We will also have everyone's favorite Maroon & White scarf for $15, and other spirit wear items. Cash or Check will be accepted. We’ve attached a picture of the logo.

Topic #3: But there is more than football on the agenda. Saturday night the boys' soccer game is at Rourke Field beginning at 7:00 p.m. There will be $10 per car (no matter how many people are in the car). If you arrive on foot, you will be charged the normal price of $5 (adult), $3 (student). If those arriving in cars are all wearing Superfan Shirts, they will earn a discount on the car charge. If you come to the game on foot, have on a Superfan shirt, you will get in for free.

Topic #4: Attention Bethel High Parents of Athletes who Play WINTER Sports: There will be a MANDATORY parents meeting for all parents of athletes who play winter sports on Wednesday 10/26/11 at 7:00 p.m. in the BHS Auditorium. The first half of the meeting will be run by Jayme McGovern, Athletic Director. The second half of the meeting will be breakout sessions with the coaches of the various winter sports teams (Girls/Boys Basketball, Wrestling, and Swimming). Please plan to attend this very important meeting for your child. This meeting is no longer just for freshmen parents, but for all parents!

Topic #5: Congratulations to that Brian J. Michalka who has been named a Commended Student in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program,was presented by Dr. Cosentino to this scholastically talented senior.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2012 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2012 competition by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).

“The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

PLEASE NOTE: You may have seen an article in today’s News Times regarding school busses operated by First Student Transportation that were pulled off the road following state DMV inspections. The school districts mentioned in the article were Fairfield, Trumbull, Monroe, and Shelton. No Bethel busses have been removed from operation as a result of any failure of state inspections.

Topic #6: Thank you to the Bethel Education Foundation for supporting the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) initiative at Bethel Middle School with a $7,050.00 grant for Vex Robots to complement their new STEM program.

The BEF also supported a grant for $2,500.00 for iPod Touches and a docking station to be used in Johnson School's art classes. If you haven't given to the Bethel Education Foundation's Annual Fund Drive yet, please send in your contribution. Any amount will be welcomed! See the attachment to donate.

Topic #7: News from the Bethel High School Band Boosters! Attached you will find a form to order your Bethel Community Discount Cards. The discounts are listed right on the form. There are great savings for our local Bethel businesses and the cost is only $10 for the year. The cards are good for an entire year and can be used over and over again to earn great savings! We thank you for your support of our BHS Band Programs and particularly for your support of our local Bethel merchants!

Topic #8: Save the Date. On October 19^th, the Bethel PTO and the Bethel Education Association will be co-sponsoring a non-partisan Candidate Forum for those running for the Board of Education. Seven positions will be on the ballot. The event will begin at 6:30 at Bethel High with candidates representing the Democratic and Working Families Parties answering questions. At 7:45 candidates from the Republican, Independent and Connecticut Tea Parties will answer questions. We encourage everyone to attend.

Topic #9: KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION! The Bethel Public Schools is starting the pre-registration process for students who will be entering kindergarten in August 2012. The earlier you register your child, the more valuable guidance you will receive from us in preparing your child for school.

Pre-registration for incoming kindergarten students begins on Monday, October 17. You can start the process by calling Sue White at 203-830-7355 any day between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. We will ask you for basic contact information so that we can provide you with paperwork prior to our formal registration in April. In early February you will receive a packet of paperwork to complete, as well as your child’s school assignment. If you have any questions, please give Sue White a call.

Topic #10: In 2011, The Board of Education Facilities Committee and DRA architects conducted a study of the existing facility conditions in Rockwell and Johnson Schools. This work also included an examination of existing educational programs, future curriculum/student requirements, an investigation into student population trends and growth expectations, development of various ideas for coping with building deficiencies and a series of workshops to explain the challenges and opportunities to the community. The study was designed to determine critical concerns found in 30 to 40 year old buildings and the cost of possible renovations.

The study revealed that the both schools have leaking roofs, plaster and masonry shifting, inadequate parking and pickup/drop-off locations, non-useful spaces and they do not meet current codes particularly regarding handicapped access. It is also clear that some re-allocation of space will be needed to serve the increased use of technology, new state curriculum requirements in elementary science, and the increased needs for physical therapy and autism services.

DRA provided different renovation options including some cost and state reimbursement estimates. The Board will now examine all options provided before recommending a course of action to other fiscal authorities.

Topic #13: Here are planned activities for Bethel Pro-Access:

Sycamores for $5 – Wed. Oct. 19 from 3-5. Take the bus down to Sycamores right from school. For $5 you can have burger, hot dog or chicken nuggets plus fries and a drink or a shake.

Pro Access will be opened from 2:30 – 6PM on Thursday, Oct. 20, Wed., Oct. 26 and Thurs. Oct. 27. Come and hang out, do your homework, play games or just chill with your friends.

All the pizza you can eat for $5 at Famous Pizza for Pro Access members and “member-wanna-be” on Tuesday, Oct. 25 from 3-5PM.

Pro Access will be opened Friday night Oct. 21 from 7-10PM. We’ll be hosting a games tournament. Enter each tournament for $1. There will be ping-pong, fooseball, air hockey and pool tournaments.

Trip to LAKE COMPOUNCE’s HAUNTED GRAVEYARD AND RIDES – Sat. Oct. 29. We will leave Bethel at 5PM and leave the park at 11PM. Cost: $25. Money and RSVP needed by Monday, Oct. 25.

Homework Help – are you in need of help? Pro Access has high-school students taking AP and Honor classes interested in tutoring you. The cost is $10/hour. Tutoring will take place at Pro Access and a Pro Access staff member will be at the Center during the tutoring. We have computers and a workspace for one-on-one tutoring. Trick or Treat Street! Looking for some Halloween fun? On Saturday, October 29th from 1:00–2:00 p.m. there will be an Animal Encounters show with “Curious Creatures” for all ages in the Municipal Center G.P. Room. Christmas Show Come and enjoy a day in New York City on Sunday, November 13^th. The day will include the Christmas Show at Radio City Music Hall and time to look around the city. Topic #15: Bethel Middle School student, Ethan Brown, has been formally recognized by the National Association of Gifted Children as Connecticut's winner of the 2011 Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award. The selection committee was not only excited about Ethan's love of mathematics, but impressed by the initiative he took in wanting to learn more on his own. The performances and presentations he gives are highly entertaining and fascinating. He truly impressed our faculty in June with his presentation on mathematics. He has also dedicated himself to giving assemblies to elementary children in an effort to inspire greater interest and confidence in math.

Topic #17: Bethel Special Education PTO is hosting a free workshop presented by Connecticut Parent Advocacy Center (CPAC) entitled Effective Communication: Improved communication skills can help parents gain confidence whenever they are working with professionals who are helping their children. This training will help parents and professionals identify their communication strengths and weaknesses, and will offer strategies to help if obstacles arise. This event will be held on Monday, November 14, 2011 from 7 PM to 8:30 PM at Bethel High School in the Media Center. Registration is required by November 11th.

Topic #1: CENTRAL PTO DIRECTORIES ARE HERE! If you joined the Central PTO before September 24, your complimentary directory will be sent home Friday, October 21 with the youngest child at your address. If you ordered one but did not receive it, please check with your child's teacher. Orders received after September 24 will be sent home next week. Topic #2: The Bethel Navy JROTC is once again sponsoring Operation Sweet Tooth with the Bethel Gentle Dental Office. The Candy Buy-Back will happen on Tuesday, November 1st from 3:30 to 5:30 PM at the Bethel Gentle Dental office on 27 Grassy Plain Street. Children participating will be eligible to receive prizes and gift certificates from local merchants. In addition, the children will receive $1.00 for every pound of candy ($5.00 max) donated.

The donated candy will be sent to troops from Bethel who are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan as our "Ambassadors of Bethel." The hope is that the troops will then share the candy with children in the war zone, thereby creating good will. Bethel residents are encouraged to participate. If there are any residents who know of someone serving overseas, please send their name and mailing address to LCDR Dwinells at BHS (dwinellsm@bethel.k12.ct.us)

Topic #3: Here’s a note to BHS students and parents: Want to thank a teacher for writing a letter of recommendation for your son/daughter? Want to spook your son or daughter on Halloween? Buy a Halloween Gram! The grams will be filled with candy and delivered on October 31st by someone in a freaky costume. The grams are $3 each and will be sold until Tuesday, October 25th. This is open to Bethel High School only. Have your child buy them during his/her lunch or email Abdullah Hasan at hasan.abdullah7@gmail.com to order one.

Topic #4: Babysitting Evenings are back! The BHS Mock Trial Team will provide a fun-filled evening for your child age 4-10 on Friday, November 4, 2011 at the Rockwell School Gym/Café. Drop off begins at 5:30 p.m. Pick up is at 9:00 p.m. We will provide a nut-free snack, drink, games, crafts and gym activities. $15.00 per child per evening. Topic #8: Bethel Special Education PTO is hosting a free workshop presented by Connecticut Parent Advocacy Center (CPAC) entitled Effective Communication: Improved communication skills can help parents gain confidence whenever they are working with professionals who are helping their children. This training will help parents and professionals identify their communication strengths and weaknesses, and will offer strategies to help if obstacles arise. This event will be held on Monday, November 14, 2011 from 7 PM to 8:30 PM at Bethel High School in the Media Center. Registration is required by November 11th.

Topic #9: Are you concerned that your child might be experiencing developmental delays? If so you and your child (3-5 years old) are encouraged to participate in a Circle of Friends screening. While meeting the staff to discuss concerns or ask questions regarding your child’s development, your child will take part in informal play activities that include songs and motor activities. The preschool team includes the Supervisor of Special Education, Preschool Special Education Teachers, Speech/Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist and Physical Therapist.

Congratulations to our Boy’s and Girl’s Soccer Teams, and our Field Hockey team who placed in the top 8 of the SWC to earn a spot in the quarterfinals of the SWC tournament this weekend.

The following Boys' Cross Country runners will be the leaders for Bethel in the Class M state tournament: Brian Walters and Travis Braisted.

The boy’s soccer team will be playing at Brookfield today at 4:00 p.m. in the quarterfinal round of the SWC tournament.

Topic #1: Come to the Bethel High School Cabaret! The BHS Choirs present: "Let Me Entertain You," a Broadway Cabaret tonight at 7PM in the Bethel High Cafeteria. Tickets are $5 at the door. You will hear the BHS Concert Choir, Treble Choir and Chamber Singers as well as many wonderful soloists!

Topic #2: 3rd annual James Thomsen Memorial Fundraiser is being held this weekend. In 2009 James Thomsen was a senior at Bethel High School on the track team when he was diagnosed with brain cancer. James is a very special person to the student body and the BHS faculty. This fundraiser was started to help his family with medical expenses. Unfortunately, James passed away before he could graduate with his class in June of 2010. The Bethel All-Sports Booster Club established a memorial scholarship fund in his name. This will be the 2nd year this fundraiser will contribute to this scholarship.

The fundraiser is being held at 7 Walnut Hill Road. They are offering carved pumpkins for a donation of $10.00 each. The event will start on Friday October 28th from 12:00 - 5:00 and run from 9:00 - 5:00 Saturday and Sunday. Topic #3: Trick or Treat Street! On Saturday, October 29th from 1:00–2:00 p.m. there will be an Animal Encounters show with “Curious Creatures” for all ages in the Municipal Center G.P. Room. Then walk along Greenwood Avenue for Halloween treats! Don’t forget to wear your best costumes for the Costume Contest down on Greenwood Avenue; judging will take place at 4:00 p.m. For more information, call the Parks and Recreation office at 794-8531.

Topic #8: Congratulations to the Board of Education for earning the Leadership Award from the Connecticut Association of Board of Education. This recognition is designed to point out which local boards and their superintendents exhibit the most effective leadership characterized by their ability to work together as “teams” without political partisanship. We appreciate the work of Bethel Board Chairman Lawrence Craybas, Vice Chairman Melanie O’Brian, Secretary Robin Renner, and members Stuart Carlsen, Janice Chrzescijanek, Scott Clayton, Michael Duff, William Duff, and Kristen Lacey for their work representing our children and the school community. It is also appropriate to note the contributions of members Jill DeRosa and Amy Mannion who recently left the Board.

Topic #10: On Stage players have changed the fall drama to " Blithe Spirit" by Noel Coward. The play centers around the life of Charles Condomine whose first wife dies unexpectedly at a young age. Charles remarries and invites a medium, Madame Arcati to summon up the spirtit of his first wife Elvira, with whom he was deeply in love. When Elvira appears Charles is the only one who can see and talk to her. Elvira is very upset that Charles has married his second wife, Ruth and plans for his demise. Through a change of events Charles is left a widower again and is haunted by his two wives. You'll have to come to see the play to find out how the plot unfolds. Cast members include: Nick Damraksa ('12) as Charles, Natalia Stifano ('14) as Ruth, Isabel Brooks ('14) as Elvira, Daniela Vega ('13) as Edith, Justin Quader ('13) as Dr. Bradman, Meghan Finch ('13) as Mrs. Bradman, and Lucy Shea ('13) as Madame Arcati.

Performances are November 17 & 18 at 7:00 P.M. in the Bethel High School auditorium. General admission tickets are $ 7.00.

Topic #11: The U11 Bethel Bandits have made the FINAL FOUR!! The U11 Bethel Girl’s Travel team has made it to the semi-final round of the Connecticut Cup Soccer Tournament. The tournament which started with 68 teams from across the state is now down to the final four. The semi-final game is home against Danbury this Saturday Oct. 29 at 1:00pm at Rourke Field. Please come out and support the team!

Homework Help Program – Pro Access is providing tutors for students in middle and high school. Tutors will be students in AP and Honors classes in the high school. Students will be tutored at Pro Access at a mutually agreeable time. Tutoring sessions will take place at Pro Access. A staff person from Pro Access will always be available during the tutoring sessions. Cost for tutoring will be paid by parents directly to the tutors and will be $10. Please contact Hilda if you are interested in being a tutor or having a tutor. This program is currently looking for Trigonometry Tutors. If you have taken Trigonometry and successfully passed, please contact Hilda DeLucia.

Friday we will operate with a two-hour delayed opening schedule

Friday buses will not travel on Shelly Road, Sharon Court, Redwood Drive, or Deepwood Drive

Food service will resume its regular schedule, prices, and offerings on Friday

SAT testing will take place as scheduled Saturday morning at Bethel High!

Attached to this newsletter you will find a revised 2011-2012 school calendar. These are the changes:

November 10 & 11

Schools were scheduled to be closed. Schools will now be open both days. Each school will commemorate Veteran’s Day during the class day.

November 23 (this is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving)

Schools were scheduled to be on an early dismissal schedule. Schools will now be closed to students. Teachers will report for professional development from 8 AM to 1 PM

January 13

Schools were scheduled to be closed. Schools will now be open.

January 16

Schools will be closed to students. Teachers will report for professional development on the regular schedule.

February 20 & 21

Schools were scheduled to be closed. Schools will now be open.

With this schedule we will enter the snow season retaining most of our planned “snow day make-up days” in June. Currently school is scheduled to end on June 14^th. Additional days lost will be added beginning with June 15^ththrough June 29^th..

Topic #1: This is an important message from the Connecticut Department of Public Health. There has been a drastic increase in the number of cases of carbon monoxide poisoning from the use of generators and cooking equipment in our state. Some of these cases have resulted in hospitalization, and even death.

DO NOT USE generators, charcoal or gas grills, gas lanterns or camping stoves indoors or in an enclosed area, like a garage or basement. These items should be used outdoors only. DO NOT use a generator in a garage even if the garage doors and windows are open. Ventilation is not sufficient and could result in carbon monoxide build-up inside of your home.

It is also important that you are familiar with the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning which include: headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, sleepiness and confusion. If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning, IMMEDIATELY leave your home and dial 9-1-1 from OUTSIDE of your home. If you have questions regarding carbon monoxide, please call (860) 509-7740 or go online to www.ct.gov/dph.

Topic #2: Babysitting Friday! The BHS Mock Trial Team will provide a fun-filled evening for your child age 4-10 on Friday, November 4, 2011 at the Rockwell School Gym/Café. Drop off begins at 5:30 p.m. Pick up is at 9:00 p.m. We will provide a nut-free snack, drink, games, crafts and gym activities. $15.00 per child per evening. The Mock Trial team is trying to raise funds to attend a very informative seminar at Harvard University!

Rescheduled Event - The Inaugural Fairfield County Walk for Pancreatic Cancer Research that was to be held on October 30th has been re-scheduled to November 13th at the Bethel High School Track. Registration opens at 9:30 A.M. and the Walk will begin at 11:00 A.M. You don't have to be registered to participate. Simply show up and join in as we walk for a cure!

Athletic events this weekend:

Friday Nov. 4th - Boys Soccer @ Pomperaug - 7 p.m. (SWC quarterfinal game - at PHS)

Friday Nov. 4th - Varsity Football @ Newtown - 7 p.m. (regular season game)

Saturday Nov. 5th - JV Football vs. Newtown - 10 a.m. (at BHS Stadium Field) - this is subject to change

Saturday Nov. 5th - Boys Soccer SWC Final game @ Bunnell 4 p.m. (if boys soccer wins Friday night, they will play in this game)

Saturday Nov. 5th - Girls Volleyball semi-finals and final game (Bethel High School is hosting this event). Semi finals at 3 and 5 p.m. and finals at 8 p.m.

Topic #3: This Sunday, November 6^th, the Stony Hill Volunteer Fire Department and the Stony Hill Four Corners Association is sponsoring a Halloween Pancake Breakfast from 9:00a.m.to 12:00 p.m. Kids are invited to come in costume. The first 100 children will receive a goody basket. They will also have gift basket raffles donated by Newtown and Bethel merchants. All proceeds go to the Ambulance Fund.

Topic #4: Operation Sweet Tooth is still on, just one week later. The Bethel Navy JROTC is once again sponsoring Operation Sweet Tooth with the Bethel Gentle Dental Office. The Candy Buy-Back will happen on Tuesday, November 8th from 3:30 to 5:30 PM at the Bethel Gentle Dental office on 27 Grassy Plain Street. Children participating will be eligible to receive prizes and gift certificates from local merchants. In addition, the children will receive $1.00 for every pound of candy ($5.00 max) donated.

Topic #6: Pre-School Screening! Are you concerned that your child might be experiencing developmental delays? If so you and your child (3-5 years old) are encouraged to participate in a Circle of Friends screening. While meeting the staff to discuss concerns or ask questions regarding your child’s development, your child will take part in informal play activities that include songs and motor activities.

The preschool team includes the Supervisor of Special Education, Preschool Special Education Teachers, Speech/Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist and School Social Worker. The next screening date is Wednesday, November 30th from 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Topic #7: On Stage players have changed the fall drama to " Blithe Spirit" by Noel Coward. The play centers around the life of Charles Condomine whose first wife dies unexpectedly at a young age. Charles remarries and invites a medium, Madame Arcati to summon up the spirtit of his first wife Elvira, with whom he was deeply in love. When Elvira appears Charles is the only one who can see and talk to her. Elvira is very upset that Charles has married his second wife, Ruth and plans for his demise. Through a change of events Charles is left a widower again and is haunted by his two wives. You'll have to come to see the play to find out how the plot unfolds. Cast members include: Nick Damraksa ('12) as Charles, Natalia Stifano ('14) as Ruth, Isabel Brooks ('14) as Elvira, Daniela Vega ('13) as Edith, Justin Quader ('13) as Dr. Bradman, Meghan Finch ('13) as Mrs. Bradman, and Lucy Shea ('13) as Madame Arcati. Performances are November 17 & 18 at 7:00 P.M. in the Bethel High School auditorium. General admission tickets are $ 7.00.

Topic #8: Connecticut Swimming, Inc. the governing body for competitive swimming in Connecticut will be holding its Annual Awards Banquet at Aqua Turf on Sunday, Nov 6 to honor the top swimmers in the 2010-11 Short Course and 2011 Long Course seasons. The Connecticut Swimming Top 16 honors go to swimmers who post the 16 fastest times in the state in each age group and individual event. Bethel swimmers Timmy Joyce and Moira Lee, both of Johnson School will be honored at the banquet where Timmy will receive the Top 16 honors for his 400L Free, 100L Back and 50L Back and Moira will receive the Top 16 honors for her 50Y Back and 50L Back. Congratulation to both for a great year!

Topic #11: PARK and REC INTOWN BASKETBALL & WINTER REGISTRATION

Basketball: Due to the winter storm some adjustments have been made regarding team formation. The player draft was scheduled for Saturday, November 5^th and has now been moved to Saturday, November 19^th. Because of this change you will now get a call regarding your child’s team either the week of Thanksgiving or the week of November 28^th.

The season will begin on Saturday, December 4^th and will run through the end of February 2011. Schedule is subject to change based on registrations. Practice days/times for grades 2 – 8 are subject to coaches and gym availability. Coaches are still needed please contact the office.

Winter Registration: Flyers will be going to the schools this Friday, November 3^rd. Flyer should be online sometime next week, and registration will begin Saturday, November 12^th . Thank you for your patience and understanding. J

Topic #1: Happy Veteran's Day to our wonderful veterans. Thank you for helping keep our nation free and safe for all of us. Berry Kindergarten classes wrote thank you notes to our veterans and mailed them to a Veterans Hospital in CT. We appreciate the sacrifices you and your families make for all of us.

Topic #2: Athletic Events this weekend:

The Boys Soccer team will play against Weston today at 2 p.m. on Rourke Field in the first round of the CIAC state tournament.

Varsity Football will play Immaculate tonight at 7 p.m. on the stadium field. It is senior night, and we will also be honoring the members of Bethel High's inaugural hall of fame class at halftime. Lastly, tonight is youth football night. Any youth football player can wear his jersey and get into the game for free.

Tomorrow, Saturday 11/12, the Girls Soccer team will travel to Guilford to play at 5 p.m. in the second round of the CIAC state tournament.

Topic #3: BHS Boys Soccer will HOST Weston today, Friday, 11/11 for a 2 p.m. first round game to be played on Rourke Field.

Topic #4: This past weekend the Bethel Marching Wildcats performed in two competitions on Saturday. They are now the USSBA STATE CHAMPIONS in the class II division and they earned their 6th consecutive 1st Place award in the Norwalk Competition. GO BETHEL!

In addition to overall 1st Place, we are proud to announce that the Wildcats also received several Caption Awards at both Norwalk and the USSBA State Championships. They are: Outstanding Music, Outstanding Marching, Outstanding Color Guard, Outstanding General Effect and Outstanding Percussion. CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR STUDENTS, MR. COACHMAN & OUR INSTRUCTORS.

They will be performing at Kennedy Stadium in Bridgeport, CT for MAC Championships on Saturday, November 12th at 5:45p.m. This will be the last competition of the fall marching band season.

Topic #6: The BHS National Business Honor Society is having their first induction on Thursday, November 17th @ 7pm, in the BHS Media Center. BHS is the first in the State of Connecticut to have a chapter and the 13th in the country.

Topic #7: This week BMS held its annual election for BMS Student Council Officers. Twenty students representing grades 6-8 presented speeches to the entire student body highlighting their respective qualifications. On the whole, the students were outstanding, and the speeches exemplary. We congratulate and thank all students who campaigned for elected office and we congratulate the following winners:

Topic #11: The U11 Bethel Girl’s Soccer Team Advances to the Finals of State Cup Soccer Tournament. Congratulations to the U11 girl’s soccer team for bringing home another win this past weekend. The girls, coached by Warren Delaney, replayed their snow-shortened State Cup Semi-Final game Saturday; they beat the Danbury Twisters 1-0 to advance to the State Cup Finals and a shot at the title of U11 Girls State Champs!

Bethel's victory advances them to the Connecticut State Cup Championship game on Sunday November 13^th at 12:30 pm at Tunxis Meade Park in Farmington against a strong Norwalk team. This accomplishment is a first for a Bethel youth soccer team in several years; only three other Bethel youth soccer teams have ever advanced to the State Cup finals! GO BANDITS!!! BRING IT HOME!!!

If so you and your child (3-5 years old) are encouraged to participate in a Circle of Friends screening. While meeting the staff to discuss concerns or ask questions regarding your child’s development, your child will take part in informal play activities that include songs and motor activities.

The preschool team includes the Supervisor of Special Education, Preschool Special Education Teachers, Speech/Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist and School Social Worker. The next screening date is Wednesday, November 30th from 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Topic #13: On Stage players have changed the fall drama to "Blithe Spirit" by Noel Coward. The play centers around the life of Charles Condomine whose first wife dies unexpectedly at a young age. Charles remarries and invites a medium, Madame Arcati to summon up the spirit of his first wife Elvira, with whom he was deeply in love. When Elvira appears Charles is the only one who can see and talk to her. Elvira is very upset that Charles has married his second wife, Ruth, and plans for his demise. Through a series of events Charles is left a widower again and is haunted by his two wives. You'll have to come to see the play to find out how the plot unfolds. Cast members include: Nick Damraksa ('12) as Charles, Natalia Stifano ('14) as Ruth, Isabel Brooks ('14) as Elvira, Daniela Vega ('13) as Edith, Justin Quader ('13) as Dr. Bradman, Meghan Finch ('13) as Mrs. Bradman, and Lucy Shea ('13) as Madame Arcati. Tonight! At this evening's meeting, Bethel Board of Education, elected Dr. Kevin Smith to the position of Superintendent of Schools replacing Dr. Gary Chesley who announced his retirement this past summer after serving as Bethel’s Superintendent of Schools for 13 years. Dr. Smith has served as Principal of the Bethel Middle School since 2006. Previously he worked as principal of the Sacred Heart School, the largest K-8 parochial elementary school in the New York Diocese located in the Bronx. Dr. Smith is also an adjunct professor at Fordham University. The unanimous vote of the Bethel Board of Education marks the conclusion of a search process that started in July shortly after Dr. Chesley’s announcement. Dr. Smith will work with Dr. Chesley, who will serve as Interim Superintendent through the transition process. Dr. Smith’s official starting date will be February 1, 2012.

The Board of Education pursued a clearly defined and rigorous plan of action in its search to find a new Superintendent of Schools. Advertisements were placed in Education Week in July and August. This weekly education journal has approximately 400,000 subscribers. The job notice was also placed on-line on Top School Jobs.org; on K-12 Jobs Spot.com; on CT Reap.com; and with the National Education Association’s database. Search efforts solicited 21 applications from 9 different states.

Dr. Chesley and Mrs. Catherine Richard, Bethel resident and former principal of Danbury High School, did the initial screening of the 21 candidates on behalf of the Board of Education. They held hour-long discussions with the candidates to determine their suitability to continue with the application process. Six candidates were eventually recommended to the Board based upon their qualifications, employment history and areas of expertise.

The Board worked many evenings preparing for the actual interviewing process. They identified priorities for the next Superintendent as well as the qualities they felt were essential for the next leader of Bethel’s School System. The Board met with school administrators and teachers in focus groups to hear their expectations as well as what they believed the requirements should be for the new Superintendent of Schools. The Board also considered comments and input from parents and individual citizens.

The Board systematically reviewed the credentials of the recommended candidates and completed two rounds of intensive interviews, first with six candidates and then, on November 15^th, with the four finalists. Finalists spent about 3 hours answering approximately 40 Board questions through the entire interview process. The Board held intensive discussions after each round of in-depth interviews to narrow the field.

Lawrence Craybas, Board Chairman stated, “The community should be extremely satisfied and very proud of the process the Board followed. Board members clearly weighed the gravity of this decision through every step of the selection process. We had an extraordinary talented and diverse pool of candidates who were highly interested in the Bethel position. We thank our staff members for their excellent insights. We worked through a defined process to make sure that our schools will be lead by a person who will continue our primary focus on growing student achievement, accelerate our trajectory to excellence, and help us build on a truly great school system in the years ahead.”

Friday! The BHS girls soccer team beat Joel Barlow Tuesday in two exciting rounds of PKs to advance to the semifinal game of the CIAC state tournament! This is very exciting, especially because this is the farthest girls soccer has gone in the tournament in a very, very long time. The game is this Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Falcon Field in Meriden (neutral site). We will play Farmington High School. It is going to be a great game, and our girls could use your support. Please consider coming to support the girls if you can!

Friday! The Key Club will be showing the movie Rio during the Key Club Movie Night this Friday, November 18th. The movie begins at 7 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. Admission is free and concessions will be sold. We look forward to seeing you and your family at this fun event. Wear your pajamas for and an extra good time!

Friday and Saturday! Bethel Middle School presents the Broadway musical Annie. Tonight the performance begins at 7:00 p.m. Saturday there is a 1:00 p.m. matinee and a 7:00 p.m. show. This is a terrific show for young children. All parts are played by BMS students. Admission is a $6.00 donation.

Saturday! Is the Annual Holiday FOOD DRIVE & Tree Lighting. This Annual Food Drive benefits the Bethel & Newtown Food Banks. It is followed by a Holiday Tree Lighting and Festivities! The event is Saturday, November 19^th at the Big Y Plaza from 10am - 5pm. Non-perishables will be collected by Stony Hill and Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Fighters in the Big Y parking lot. Tree Lighting & Festivities: 5:30pm - 6:30pm. In attendance will be Santa & Mrs. Claus. Music will be provided by The Pears. Topic #1: Due to the extraordinary amount of damage caused by Winter Storm Alfred and remaining debris, Town of Bethel highway crews will continue to pick up storm related tree debris through Friday, December 16th. There are important restrictions and considerations that our residents are asked to observe. Please read the following carefully:

This is a ONE TIME only pickup due to the extenuating circumstances pertaining to this storm. The town is not ordinarily responsible for debris on private property. This is a one time consideration due to the amount of debris left behind following the storm.
Debris should be stacked no closer than 5' from the side of the road, keeping it well clear of fire hydrants, utility poles, mailboxes and other obstructions. Please insure the brush is not piled on top of any kind of fencing. It is impossible for the mechanical grapple to pick up the brush without destroying the fence.
Please limit the material to storm related tree debris only. Please do not take this opportunity to conduct routine pruning of other trees on your property, and we ask for everyone's strict cooperation on this request. Debris not related to the storm could jeopardize the town's FEMA reimbursement that will be needed to partially offset the already significant costs related to storm cleanup. Please insure that no other non-tree material is mixed into your brush pile (damaged picnic tables, deck railings, etc). These will not be picked up.
You will not need to call the town's highway department to schedule pickup. You can find a town map with color coded neighborhood pickup schedules at www.bethelct.org.
Please bring your materials out to the curb as soon as possible, regardless of the date scheduled for your neighborhood. Our highway department personnel will be working seven days per week to clear the town as quickly as they can, and they could possibly move into your neighborhood ahead of schedule. (SEE NOTE THERE ARE TWO ATTACHMENTS)

Topic #2: The CORE Club at BHS is sponsoring a Thanksgiving Food Drive to support disadvantaged families at the Women's Center of Greater Danbury. They will be collecting non-perishable goods from now until Tuesday November 22. Boxes are set up in the main lobby at the high school for donations. They had a very successful food drive last year and we are hoping to be able to do that again this holiday season. They are asking for:

Topic #4: This past weekend in Bridgeport at the Musical Arts Conference Championships, the Bethel Marching Wildcats won the Championship in the Class II division against 4 other schools. They were UNDEFEATED the entire season. What a huge accomplishment and amazing job done by all involved! In addition to overall 1st Place, we are proud to announce that the Wildcats also received the following Caption Awards. They are: Outstanding Overall Effect, Outstanding Marching, Outstanding Music, Outstanding Percussion, Outstanding Drum Majors CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR STUDENTS, MR. COACHMAN & OUR INSTRUCTORS.

Topic #: A special congratulations to Bethel special education teacher, Amy Faul, who learned this week that an article she co-authored for of the Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions has been published. The article, “The Effects of Prompting Appropriate Behavior on the Off-Task Behavior of Two Middle School Students” is an outstanding contribution to the field. More evidence that Bethel teachers are simply top-notch.
