Composer

By Daniel I.

At the Middle School, we went to see a man who was telling about a composer, named Fredrick Chopin's life. He composed classical piano music and was very popular in Poland and France. The man was a very good at playing the piano and told a lot about Chopin. After he was done, the chorus kids sung happy birthday to Chopin in Polish and French to celebrate his 200th birthday.

New Media Center Website

By Shane S. in Mrs.Wicklund's Class

In the Media Center they have a new website you can see the most checked out books, book you might like maybe by the same author or the same plot. It's also easier to use than the old one and you can put books you want but that are checked out in a certain cart. You can view the newest arrival books. So now you can find your book easier and quicker. It also has better ways to really know whether the book is in or out. So go to the media center on Johnson School Website and look at this new website.

Science Fair

By Sarah S. in Ms. Althen's Class

Hi! My name is Sarah. I am going to tell you about the science fair. The science fair is a activity that fourth and fifth grade students do. The science fair is optional. In the science fair we have many awards given out. You get one, a blue ribbon for participating. If you win you get a trophy. The second place ribbon is red and first place is blue. When you compete you can only be in a pair or work by yourself, but remember if you work in a partnership, then you have to do double the work. Well, the science fair is a great opportunity for you to show other people how you can work with science!

January 2010

On Monday, February 1, 2010 Johnson School had the pleasure of participating in the 11th Annual Celebration of the Arts, at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington, CT. The Connecticut Association of Schools has developed this wonderful opportunity for elementary schools to recognize and honor students with outstanding citizenship, cooperative skills, and artistic ability in the performing and/or visual arts. Our school honorees are fifth graders Kaylen Luu and Logan Sprock.

Both Logan and Kaylen are extraordinary students with outstanding skills in art and music. They are admirable individuals who are fair, honest, kind, compassionate, and helpful. They often exceed the expectations of their teachers and they are terrific role models for their peers.
Mrs. McCue, Ms. Torpey, Ms. Carpentier, Ms. Mancini, Mrs. Galante,
Ms. Zafrin and the honorees families attended this wonderful event to celebrate the efforts and achievements of these two fine children. Congratulations to you both!

Jump Rope for Heart

By Ariana L. in Miss Zafrin's Class

This time of year Johnson School puts on an event that is called Jump Rope for Heart. Jump Rope for Heart raises money to prevent heart disease, strokes, and heart attacks. What is Jump Rope for Heart? You jump rope and you learn about your heart. A lot of people are helped with the money raised. This program commemorates who have passed away from these illnesses. The kids may jump in memory of a lost loved one who suffered from one of these fates. Why is Jump Rope for Heart important? Some kids have different hearts and need your help. You can take care of your heart and learn about it during this event. How can I participate? Turn in a permission slip to jump and raise money, but before you raise money set a goal. This years Jump Rope for Heart program will be held at the Johnson School gym. Fifth grade Jump Rope for Heart is on Tuesday, February 9, 2010. Fourth grade Jump Rope for Heart is Wednesday February 10, 2010. It is a very fun event so I hope to see you there!

Type To Learn 4
By Rocco C.

Type To Learn 4 is a great way to get better at typing. In Type To Learn 4 there are levels you have to beat. When you beat level 4 or 5 you go to the next highest levels. Type To Learn 4 is typing in a fun way because you type in Drone Control and you drive to get to the base. To do the missions you have to do the Final Challenge first to start a new level. Then it unlocks the levels if you beat the Final Challenge. When you do the levels you have to make sure that you know where the keys are and type quick if you want to beat the levels that your doing. So have a great time in Type To Learn 4.

Odyssey

By Shane S.

This is a program where you get a problem and it can be where you have to make something or do a skit. Odyssey is after school on Wednesday or before school. Then in March you have the competition and if your team does really good you go to the finals. Also you have a a certain amout of money you can spend. My team has to make five planes that can do five different tasks which are:pick up an object, drop an object, go in a hoop and a few other things.

Library
By Patrick J.

There are a few ways to go to the Library to return and pick out a book. 1. Media Morning. Basically, in the morning, you go up with your class to the library and pick out books. This happens twice a month. 2. You can also go to Media in the morning by yourself if your teacher lets you. You NEED a library pass so Mrs. Haddad can see why you’re up there. You can also go up there during recess or if you have free time. You can also go up there to study. Just make sure you have a library pass.

SmartBoards

By David B. in Mr. Reid's Class

Hi, I'm David and I'm here to talk to you about the SmartBoards at Johnson School. SmartBoards are a technical tool used for learning. Each pair of teachers has at least one. The teacher has a projector hooked up to a laptop. The projector projects what is on the computer screen. The students then can go up to the screen and move the cursor around and do things. The SmartBoard makes the computer like a touch screen.

SmartBoards

By Jenna L. in Mrs. Wicklund's Class

Smartboards are types of electrical boards that can be found in most classrooms. Some switch classrooms share smartboards (only some). On the Smartboard you can write with very special markers to take notes of any kind or to draw. When the Smartboards are in your room your class will also receive a cart with a laptop computer. On the computer you log onto your Johnson School account and you can go onto the Internet and PowerPoint and all the other stuff you usually use but you can project onto the board. The only other thing about the Smartboard that I need to tell you is that it has motion sensors under the screen so when you touch the screen it knows.

RAZ-KIDS

by Jason Z. Mrs. Donohue's class

Raz-Kids is a fun reading program for kids. It can improve your reading. You can get into Raz-Kids if you go to the Internet. In Raz-Kids, you have to press login. After that, you enter your teacher's password that your teacher gives you. After you enter your teacher's password, you find your name. Press your name and type in your student password that you have on a paper. Then, a screen that has books and your level shows up. There is a rank that you are on such as Ensign or Lieutenant JG or Lieutenant Commander. You have to read in order to get into your next reading level. You have to read and listen to get points. You also have to do a quiz that tests you on the book so they know that you actually understand what the book is about.

Hey! Do you know the author Janell Cannon? You know the author of Stellaluna, Pinduli, Verdi, and Crickwing. Now that you are in informed, I think I should tell you about the writing contest. Yes, the media center is holding it. What you have to do is pretend you are Janell Cannon and your publisher told you need to write another book. What animal would you do? Then if you win Mrs.Haddad will send it to Janell Cannon! So if you do it try your best!

Fifth Grade Art Activity Field Trip

On Tuesday, November 10, Johnson School’s 5th grade art activity students went to see Mr. Dave Gesualdi at his in-home studio, located in Bethel. Mr. Gesualdi invited the students to see the sculpture that he is building. The bronze replica of the legendary P.T. Barnum will be on display in front of the Bethel Public Library next year. The students learned about the technical aspects of how sculptures are created, from the initial planning stages to preliminary cast molds, and finally to the full sized artwork. The students also got to put clay onto the figure itself! We all learned a great deal about sculptures and the sculptural process. It was a tremendously enjoyable and educational experience for everyone.

Brotherhood in Action

By Emily Q. and Sarah S. in Mr. Moscowitz's and

Miss Althen's Classes

Hi! We are here to talk to you about the Brotherhood in Action. Brotherhood in Action is when you donate non-perishable foods to people that cannot afford the food. Johnson School has boxes in the main lobby, so if you want to you could give your kids a few cans and they could put them in the boxes. We bring all the food to a food bank in Connecticut. Two examples of a can brand is Giant Green or Campbell Soup. You don't have to do this activity but it's a great way to help out people in need!

Veterans

By Jillian P. in Mrs. Galante's Class

In school Veterans visited our classrooms. They told us about stories and events they had while they were in the war. One Veteran was one of the two people who started dropping candy for children. That means when their plane flew overhead they would wiggle the planes wings, drop candy out of the plane, and the kids would grab it out of the air and eat it. At first the kids would throw rocks at the plane, but then they loved the pilots. After the candy dropping became regular other pilots joined in and did the same. Many years later a person wrote a story about a girl and the candy dropping. Another story he told was that his plane was carrying coal. After a month of that they started carrying flour. He and his crew were turned black and white.

Veteran's Wall of Remembrance
By Hayley A.

Up on the wall in the hallway down by the gym is the Veteran's Wall of Remembrance. It is the wall where the students in the school are able to send in a picture on a veteran in their family and a little description on them. There are plenty of veterans in the town of Bethel and plenty of students in the school. If you have a Veteran in your family you might want to get a picture of them, and write a little description so all of the school can remember how much your family member gave to the country to save us and keep us protected. So thank you to all of the Veterans who kept us protected during the horrible wars, and to all of the soldiers fighting right now for us.

After School Sports

By Nicholas D.

I am writing about after school sports. One reason is because I am in after school sports. In after school sports we play Dodge ball, Kick ball, Capture the Flag, and Capture the football!! Our teachers are Mr. Moscowitz, Matt and his friend Andrew. After school sports started three weeks ago!!!

THE READ-A-THON

By Jason Z.

I am going to write about the Read-A-Thon. The ten Nutmeg Books of 2010 are: The Year of the Dog, The Ghost's Grave, Double Identity, Rules, The Attack of the Turtle, Drita My Homegirl, A Dog's Life, Archer's Quest, Paint the Wind and Stumptown Kid. The Read-A-Thon started on October 5, 2009. It will end on December 4, 2009. You have to write what it is about on a Nutmeg Book Summary sheet. Then you have to go to the media center and give it to Mrs. Haddad or Mrs. Lusita who are running the book marathon. If they accept it they will give you a raffle ticket. Then you put your name on it and your teacher's name. Every week they pick a ticket and the person who wins gets small prizes. At the end, if you win, you get to be a Media Specialist and get to have pizza with three of your friends. If your class wins, then you will have an ice cream party!

The Fitness Test
By: Rocco C.

The fitness test is to see how healthy you are and where you are at. The four activities are push ups, curl ups, sit and reach and the mile for running. For the mile the boys have to beat nine minutes and the girls have to beat nine minutes thirty seconds. The sit and reach for the boys you had to beat 8 inches and the girls had to beat 9 inches. If you beat those numbers you get a footsie. The curl ups for boys and girl you had to beat 26 to pass.

Technology

ByJillian P. in Mrs. Galante's Class

Hi I am Jillian P. and I want to talk to you about the technology at Johnson School. One piece is called a SmartBoard. It has many things to do like, you have different colored markers on it, so you can write. The markers are specially designed so you can rub them on any surface but no color will so up unless you rub it on the SmartBoard. You can also play games found on websites. Another piece of excitement found in this school is Senteos. They are hand held devices that you type your student number into, your teacher can type a question on the SmartBoard, and you can type in your answer on the Senteo. The teacher can see who got the question right, and who got it wrong. That is some of the technology at Johnson school.

Nutmeg Books

Hello! My name is Sarah. I will tell you about the Nutmeg books. The Nutmeg books are ten books that the whole school reads, (if they choose too) and then vote on which book was most interesting. The ten books for this school year are: Paint the Wind, Double Identity, A Dogs Life, The Ghosts Grave, The Year of the Dog, Rules, Drita my Home Girl, Archers Quest, Attak of the Turtle, and Stumptown Kid. These are all the Nutmeg books. Each book you read you get one ticket and put it into a jar with your name on the back. Before getting a ticket, you must fill out a sheet and write about the book, for proof that you read the book. At the the end of the due date a teacher picks out a name and that name gets a prize. They get to be the media specialist (Mrs.Haddad) for a day and they get to have a pizza party with three of their friends. This is all the information I know about the Nutmeg books.

The Year Of The Dog

By Emily Q. in Mr. Moscowitz's Class

In Johnson school we are reading nutmeg books. One book is The Year of the Dog. It is about a chinese girl that was born in the year of the dog. Her mom told her the year of the dog is the year you find yourself and what your talent is. She is so upset that next year when her sister leaves her school because she is too old she will be the only chinese-american in the school. But a new girl that is a chinese-american comes to her school in her grade and they become best friends. She also enters the science fair with her new best friend. They do not win because they did not keep everything in the same habitat. I think you should read this book. You could find out her interests and what she is going to be when she grows up.
