Historical
Research
By
Ariana L. in Miss Zafrin's Class
In early December, the students had to pick a famous historical person.
Then, the students had to checkout a book of the person they are researching
out of Johnson School’s media center. After they couldn’t
find any more information in books, they were allowed to go on the computers.
The computers had a lot more information. After you had all the information
you could find you wrote a script. Your script had all the information
you found. Also, we had to have the life of the person. Then when you
were done with your script you went on Garage Band to create your podcast.
A podcast is where you record your voice and you say what you wrote. After
you are done you add music to the background. Then you need to add pictures.
You search your person on the computer in order to find pictures. Then
you listen to your podcast to make sure you have all the information you
needed. After the CMT’s are done we will have a living museum. The
living museum is where all the kids will dress up as their person that
they researched. All the parents will walk around and ask the kids facts
about themselves. It is a very good experience.
Creature
Feature
By
Michael H. in Mr. Moscowitz's Class
In Mr. Moscowitz's class we are doing a project called creature feature.
This project is where we start from scratch and create an animal. We use
everything we know about senses and animal adaptation to describe the
animal. You can even give it a name, it could be totally made up. This
project is due on March 12, 2010. Your animal can be friends, predators,
or prey to your best friends animal. This project is all about creativity.
This project is also an at home project or we could go to the media center
for recess and work on it there.

Fifth
Grade Podcast Project
By
Daniel I.
I want to tell you about the language arts biography project that we are
doing. You are supposed to pick a person who has accomplished something
in the world. I picked Muhammad Ali. I know some people who have also
chosen Walt Disney or Robert E. Lee or even Elvis. You have to gather
information and put it on the organizer. Then, for the podcast you make
out of the person, you have to write a script. In the podcast, you have
to pretend you are the person. That is one of the big projects this year.

Science
By Hannah K. in Mr.Mo's Class
Hi! My name is Hannah and in Mr.Mo's class we have been learning about
the ear. When sound goes through the ear it goes through the ear canal.
Then it vibrates the ear drum and goes to the cochlea [cochlea looks like
a snail and has little hairs on it.] Next it goes up through the internal
auditory, which is the canal to the brain. This is what we been working
on in Mr.Mo’s 5th grade science class. I hope you learned a lot
about the ear!

Art
By
Michael H.
In Art, we are building things with clay. Mrs. McCue says that it must
be able to hold stuff. She also says that it has to be very creative,
no snowmen or anything along those lines. We have a couple weeks to do
it. We have just started and are not even close to finishing. She showed
us a couple of models the students in the past made, also some that she
made. We have to show her our blueprint on what we are doing before we
actually get started. She also showed us some techniques to use. But we
don't need to use them if we don't want to. The 3 techniques are pinch
pot, coyle, and slab.
Project
Adventure
By
Danny Bach in Ms. Arvidson's Class
This
week was the last project adventure in P.E. We started off with an iceberg
game that taught us to communicate with each other. We had to do this
without touching the gym floor. The last thing that we did was we climed
the climbing ladder, rope and net. That is my article about project adventure.
Hope you liked it.
Moodle
Book Club
By
Amanda T. in Mr. Correia's Class
Mrs. Haddad
has a new thing she is doing with Moodle. It is the Moodle Book Club!
One or two kids from every fifth grade classroom are selected to participate
in the book club. All you do is pick a book to read, and every time you
meet (which is usually on Thursdays at 2:30) Mrs. Haddad puts up a new
question for you to answer. It is due the following Thursday. If you are
selected you only get to be in it for a certain amount of time because
Mrs. Haddad wants about everyone to get to do it.
Mr.
Fenn Helps Out
By
Daniel I.
Hi, my name is Daniel and I’m going to talk to you about how Mr.
Fenn is helping us with the ropes and cargo net in P.E. Mr. Fenn was our
old guidance counselor here at Johnson before he retired. He came back
to help us with the climbing of the ladder and cargo net. He was helping
us with getting all the right gear on the right way. He would also lower
you down slowly when you got to the top. He was a big help to Mrs. Fenn
and us when we would climb so I don’t think we could have done it
without him!!!!
Community
Service
By
Amanda T. in Mr. Correia's Class
A
lot of classrooms in the fifth grade are doing a community service project
to help our school or anything that might be important and in need of
help. Mr. Correia's class is collecting soda bottle cans to get money
for our school. Some classes are collecting water bottles or juice pouches.
One class is collecting pink yoplay tops for a hospital to help fight
cancer. There are boxes in the cafateria that you can put cans or water
bottles in.

Fire
Prevention
By
Emily Q. and Sarah S.
in Mr. Moscowitz's and Miss Althen's Class
Hi!
At Johnson School we make Fire Prevention posters. It helps us realize
how dangerous fires are. If you win the contest you will get your poster
on calendars. The calendars will tell everyone in the United States about
fire awareness and safety. This is a great activity to keep people safe
from fires!
The
Pinballs
By Amanda Towey in Mr. Correia's Class
The
fifth grade core novel is The Pinballs by Betsy Byars. It is
about three children, Carlie, Harvey, and Thomas J. They each have to
go to Mr. and Mrs. Mason's foster home until their parents change. The
book is great for kids and is all about something that could really happen.
There is also a movie based on Pinballs and you watch it after you read
the book with your class. It isn't a long book, but it is really good!!!

Scratch
Boards
By Hayley A. in Miss Mancini's Class
In Art we are making scratch boards. First we colored a piece of paper
with bright, vibrant colors. Then we went over our coloring with a yellow
crayon. After that we taped a board onto the back of the paper and painted
it. My class has not started the scratching phase but we will soon. We
have scratch an animal scene. That is what we are doing in Art in fifth
grade.
Light
in Science
By
Hannah K. in Mr. Moscowitz's Class
In Mr. Mo's class we are learning about light and how light travels, so
we are doing an experiment. In the Baby Powder Experiment we had to make
the room really dark.We needed a flashlight, Baby Powder and that was
it. We also needed a carpet area rug or something that doesn't let the
baby powder get all over the floor and last but not least the most important
thing we needed was a flashlight. First we turned off the light then we
turned the flash light on and made is shine in a straight line. Next we
took the Baby powder and sprinkled it over the line of light. Once we
did that we could see the light. So we saw where the light hit but then
we could see the train of the light and how it hits in that spot. After
the experiment we had to take notes about what happend in the experiment.
This is what we did in Mr. Mo's class.
Shape Experiment
By
S arah K.
in Mrs. Galante's Class
Hi! This is Sarah reporting from Johnson School, and this is the science
part. Well as some of you know our catagory in science at the moment is
light and we are talking about shadows! We recently did an experiment
on shadows. The materials we used were things such as, two pieces of paper
taped together, a flashlight, a shape block, and a notebook. Our teacher
had to turn off the lights, and even when she closed the blinds light
still came in. What we had to do was put a big thick piece of cardboard
over the window. What we were expected to do was we had to shine the flashlight
on the block. We had to shine it on angle. We had to do this because when
we held the flashlight up it hardley made a shadow. Now we are at the
part for the paper. Once we have our shadow we have to trace the shadow.
As you work on this expirement you have to take notes. At least three
for each shadow. Okay, my report is over and it is time for YOU to do
the experiment.
