Writing Instruction

At the elementary and middle school level, students are involved in “Writers’ Workshop”. For the youngest writers, the classroom is a safe place to write on a regular basis, to discuss thinking with classmates and teacher, learn to be mindful writers and discover the techniques used by great writers by looking at text through the eye and mind of a writer. This block of instructional time focuses on teaching students those thinking strategies that are used by proficient writers. Children write for extended periods of time across many genres, receive instruction dissecting the process of writing, and prepare pieces for publication. At the high school level writing is also done and assessed across the curriculum.
